<npcomp>Hi, I am trying to kick the tires on guix in a VM. <npcomp>To that end I pxeboot a live environment of flatcar linux, then I run the guix-install.sh, but it seems to fail to finish setting up the daemon, etc. <FuncProgLinux>First time I hear about that distribution, since it's a foreign system the script might not be detecting something it needs to proceed. <npcomp>What do you mean by foreign system? Just not guix os? <npcomp>FuncProgLinux: Is this something that it's worth reporting bugs about? I have found a few things that slowed me down, but maybe the odball base system I'm using isn't of interest from a support perspective? <npcomp>So far, it's mostly around the fact that /usr is mounted read-only. <iyzsong>yeah the guix-install.sh script write some files in /usr/local and /usr/share. in that case, manaully install guix without the script can be a way. <dajole>Does anyone per chance have an example package for a printer driver? I'm trying to get my printer to work; unfortunately the splix package doesn't include the driver for it, so I'm trying to write a package that I can add as a cups extension. <civodul>looks like the 1.6.0 release team is shaping up! <untrusem>yes I wanted to take the release advocate responsibility but couldn't join the meet due to personal reasons <protvin>I have to download image form the tor. <protvin>civodul: I found here, only for stable images <civodul>right, there are no signatures for CI-generated images <lechner>Hi, which part of Guix causes my root user to be denied permission to list a non-FUSE folder otherwise only accessible to a non-root user (operm 700) please? <jlicht>ACTION would love a time-machine-based one-liner to generate/challenge tarballs & release artifacts <jlicht>Yeah I think I nabbed some of Rutherther's stuff and am currently heating my room :-) <jlicht>the goal would be something like guix time-machine -q --commit=<V+1> -- build -e '((@ (gnu ci release) guix-dist-tarball)) <jlicht>quick question; a fixed-output-derivation can have multiple possible "paths" to room, as long as the output hash + name are identical, right? <civodul>jlicht: put differently: there can be several derivations producing the same output, due to the presence of one or more fixed-output derivation in the graph <jlicht>yes, exactly! In that case, I think it's fairly simple to have a f.o.d. to inject e.g. changelogs, and author files for tarballs <civodul>hmm no, because otherwise it’s no longer “fixed-output”? <civodul>“fixed output” really means that, no matter how you obtain a given thing, its content hash will always be the same <civodul>you could be using Git, or wget, or Disarchive, or carrier pigeons: it doesn’t matter <jlicht>exactly; we need some "impure way" to get a constant result <jlicht>where some == many multiple ways, potentially <untrusem>I have trying to patch composer.phar in this package, but I don't think its its having any effect, the package builds, but gets substituted <jlicht>civodul: not an expert by any means, but if collective victimhood counts :-) <jlicht>untrusem: I don't thing you are applying ("running") the lambda, just defining it <jlicht>untrusem: and perhaps using the copy-build-system already does what you want (w.r.t the patching) <civodul>jlicht: good! :-) do you have ideas for the missing apparmor rule? we need to allows /tmp/script to have an interpreter in /gnu/store <jlicht>civodul: not sure if it's missing; it may just be outdated? (which was the case for a debian server I ran some time ago) <jlicht>jlicht: so if there's no diff, we'd have to look into some logs <untrusem>decoding-error "peek-char" "input decoding error" 84 #<input: composer.phar 7> <jlicht>untrusem: is composer.phar some kind of archive? <civodul>jlicht: it happens with a fresh 1.5 install on Ubuntu, AIUI <untrusem>ACTION is doing all this just to not do `php composer.phar` <jlicht>civodul: I do think 1.5.0 predates the 2 most recent changes to the profile file; I _think_ guix pull does not update the file in /etc? <jlicht>untrusem: I've just downloaded it, but when I change anything, I get a signature issue. So i think having a wrapper is the only way forward <jlicht>if you don't want things to break after every graft, that is <untrusem>jlicht, yep I got to the signature myself actually <protvin>jlicht: I think about prepare translations for that. <untrusem>protvin, there will be a meet in few days, you could join the volunteer <untrusem>jlicht, it was the first thing I encountered and thought this is somehow due to me <jlicht>untrusem: no, "just" using the copy-build-system seems to patch things and break the signature <jlicht>untrusem: you could try the copy-build-system and no php input; in that case, the shebang should stay "floating" and pick up the php you have installed. Not perfect <t3kkm0tt>Hi, I'm back. I'm on guix-system now, but I'm having issues with rust. Does anyone know how to get the necessary library? <t3kkm0tt>error while loading shared libraries: libgcc_s.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory <civodul>t3kkm0tt: hi! a possible reason is LD_LIBRARY_PATH: can you make sure it is unset? <civodul>then we would need more details, in particular how the program that triggers this error was built <t3kkm0tt>civodul ok, I'm gonna try unsetting first. <untrusem>its basically a foreign binary then which will you need to patch <t3kkm0tt>untrusem but is that the reason for the error? <elevenkb>Is there a way to apply a package transformation to a home configuration, so that that package is transformed and all the packages which depend on it are rebuilt? <untrusem>t3kkm0tt: you have two option, pathelf it or make a guix package <t3kkm0tt>untrusem my compositor just crashed, can you repeat if you said something? <elevenkb>untrusem: Well the package I want to replace is org mode, I want my home environment to use a fork with a cool new WIP feature that I want. AFAICT, grafting `(@ (gnu packages emacs-xyz) org-mode)` would mean that I'd have to build guix from source right? <tusharhero-xmpp>elevenkb, you can do package transformation or just define a package variant and us that. <tusharhero-xmpp>package transformation is more convienient if you don't want to put it in your guix home <t3kkm0tt>untrusem i don't know how to apply patchelf to cargo build <elevenkb>tusharehro-xmpp, yep. but the trouble is that if I have other upstream packages that depend on `org-mode` and I put those into my the packages list of my home-profile, then I'd have duplicate copies of `org-mode` in one profile which is not allowed. I'm hoping that I can apply map `(options->transformation ⋯)` to the package-list. <untrusem>t3kkm0tt: have you done any packaging in guix? <untrusem>I will try to patch this for you when I am on my machine <untrusem>t3kkm0tt: cargo build must have generated a binary right? <t3kkm0tt>untrusem i did, but as i said, it throws errors. <t3kkm0tt>untrusem the build throws errors, so I don't have a binary <untrusem>I thought you were using a pre built one <untrusem>packaging rust application as your first package might not be easy but if you are up for it I can link resources <gkoebel-ext>Is there a manual entry I'm missing to get M-x pdf-tools-install to function properly on a Guix System? <gkoebel-ext>disregard question. I ran `guix install emacs-pdf-tools` and restarted emacs and that fixed it <t3kkm0tt>untrusem I'm having another problem. The packaged rust version in the guix repos is outdated. <gkoebel-ext>it would appear something required for KDE Plasma to launch pinentry for KWallet doesn't persist through reboots on a Guix System causing it to fail with a No Pinentry found. I have a pinentry specified in my .guix-home/configuration.scm and that was working before. <redacted>Is there a way to invoke guix weather such that it checks all the packages installed on my system? <redacted>I'd like to know whether I'd need to build anything before attempting a pull. <redacted>So I'm looking for something like `guix time-machine -- pull <flags>' <redacted>Ultimately it'd be convenient to run something like `guix time-machine -- weather <flags> && guix pull' <redacted>So I don't have to cancel a long-running build I'd rather let the substitutes handle. <gkoebel-ext>redacted: `guix weather -m` would check only packages in a manifest. I'm not sure of the format but I'd think you can cook up a script to generate said manifest <gkoebel-ext>redacted: `guix package --export-manifest` will give you the packages on your profile. Then `guix weather -m MANIFEST_FILE` will check for substitutes for all those packages <t3kkm0tt>Soooo, I'm here again! I'm currently struggling to make my home configuration "run" on boot. Could anybody help me? <gkoebel-ext>redacted: or as a oneliner: guix package --export-manifest > mantest && guix weather -m mantest <gkoebel-ext>you left right before untrusem I think found a solution to your previous question <t3kkm0tt>ohhhh, I did figure out that i needed to set LD_LIBRARY_PATH to $LIBRARY_PATH and surprisingly, it worked. The only problem is that the rust version in the official channel is so old... <t3kkm0tt>untrusem one that supports `if let` statements <untrusem>to get rust from those channels you have two options <untrusem>1) copy it over to your channel and call from those <t3kkm0tt>`I'm currently struggling to make my home configuration "run" on boot. Could anybody help me?` (message from some time ago) <t3kkm0tt>untrusem uhm, I don't really know **how** to do that. <untrusem>ohh you want straight login into your user? <t3kkm0tt>untrusem yeah, because I have set my wayland compositor to execute the lockscreen on boot. <untrusem>ok you can remove the dm then in your system config <t3kkm0tt>untrusem I've already tried that, but it doesn't do anything when I do that. <t3kkm0tt>i did use the graphical installer because it was 3 am and i was lazy <t3kkm0tt>i have modified it though. I had to use the linux kernel instead of the linux-libre kernel <t3kkm0tt>i'm gonna do a kernel patch in the future though. <t3kkm0tt>i'm on niri right now, but i'm planning to create my own service for a wayland compositor in the future. <t3kkm0tt>i've been using nvim for cfgs and stuff and gram for coding <old>t3kkm0tt: because I am <t3kkm0tt>untrusem what do you think about my config? How should I auto log-in? <untrusem>basically you need to remove (gdm-service-type) also check (login-service-type) and (mingetty-service-type) <t3kkm0tt>untrusem wait- where is gdm-service-type? <lonely_ghost>i could need some help for a niri setup. someone so kind ? <t3kkm0tt>untrusem oh, did you mean remove the service entirely <untrusem>there is also home-niri-service-type iirc <untrusem>I don't see modify-services in your config t3kkm0tt, <untrusem>anyway I need to head out, I have shared everything need to achieve your task <gnufairy>I am a bit confused by the info docs on the guix mpv home service, how do I use it to enable hardware accel for my Sandybridge T420? <sneek>Welcome back gnufairy, you have 1 message! <sneek>gnufairy, lechner says: When did you last clean the lint off the fan? <gnufairy>hopefully the seller did, when they librebooted the thing <gkoebel-ext>iirc it should report some error, typical ones being the channel can't be reached or something is wrong with authentication <lonely_ghost>newbie question. to update my system is better to run guix pull (as user) and then sudo .... reconfigure or run everything with sudo -i ? <t3kkm0tt>gkoebel-ext it acts as if it doesn't exist. <t3kkm0tt>lonely_ghost I think only system commands should be executed with suda <gnufairy>guix pull is recommended to be run as the user by the docs. <gnufairy>Only guix system reconfigure needs root privileges I believe, that and guix system delete-generations. <gnufairy>Guix pull will update the guix you use anyway in future commands. <gkoebel-ext>reconfigure is for when you are changing the system config files <t3kkm0tt>Computing Guix derivation for 'x86_64-linux'... /warning: 'typst' is deprecated, use '(@ (gnu packages typst) typst)' instead <gnufairy>yes, system reconfigure is for the system wheras home reconfigur eis for home. <gkoebel-ext>t3kkm0tt: careful with multiline pastes. Libera is still ircv2 <t3kkm0tt>gkoebel-ext there should be a third channel called 'nonguix' <gnufairy>try not to discuss non-free channels here. Try on the subreddit.... <t3kkm0tt>gnufairy I uninstalled reddit and deleted my account... it's also a general issue because it did that with another channel before. <t3kkm0tt>Also, I couldn't even use guix if I didn't have nvidia drivers. I can't afford a new gpu right now... <gnufairy>Some old Nvidia GPUs work fine under the libre drivers have you tried? I recall one in a Dell desktop from the Haswell gen <t3kkm0tt>gnufairy I've got a 3060ti, I don't think that works. The nvidia kernel modules are open source though, as far as I know. <gkoebel-ext>t3kkm0tt: guix describe should output some blurb with your configured channels. If not I'd double check the problem channels setup instructions against your config.scm <reyman>i'm trying to build a python/rust package that use maturin. I compile one rust package that need another one : zensical need zrx multiple packages <reyman>it works, but when i call python with maturin, maturin try to download zrx from crates.io :( <reyman>error: failed to get `zrx` as a dependency of package `zensical v0.0.66 (/tmp/guix-build-python-zensical-0.0.66.drv-0/source/crates/zensical)` <Hannah_>gkoebel-ext: any idea why niri might not start? <Hannah_>I think it complained about me not having systemd, but that shouldn't be a problem. <Hannah_>Because I am using the home service from guix-home. <Hannah_>"/bin/sh line 1: systemct: command not found
