<jboy>(it's also streaming and will be recorded) <dthompson>jboy: thanks for dropping the link! we need to promote this on our socials <jboy>the venue would appreciate that! <cwebber>oh yeah I'll promote it on the social medias <jfred>I'm really looking forward to watching that one :D <cwebber>I'll be traveling on this trip with my MNT Reform only <cwebber>so I have been thinking about you jfred! <cwebber>right now I am running a Banana Pi in the classic <jfred>a311d was pretty nice when I was running that, though 4G of RAM was a bit of a squeeze <cwebber>it's tough because I can't decide whether to order an upgrade to the RK3588 <cwebber>but like, the Reform Next is due out soon <jfred>yeah, and the next is gonna ship with the rk3588 anyway <cwebber>and I think the Reform Next boards can be used on the Reform Classic, so probably I'll just stick with the banana pi, and then when the quasar comes out I'll just probably end up moving over the rk3588 to the Classic <cwebber>not sure what I'll do with the Classic at that point, but you know, it'll be nice to have an easy backup laptop that's also repairable <cwebber>I guess this isn't very Spritely related <jfred>I will say the rk3588 was the first one that didn't feel particularly constrained; I've joined the Spritely office hours calls from that since upgrading and it's worked fine (which it definitely did not on the slower modules) <cwebber>yeah I def think the rk3588 was the game changer in terms of MNT's machines feeling like contenders for modern computers <cwebber>and I like it on the Pocket (but mine seems to have burnt out charger board, waiting on the replacement to come in the mail, hence me using the Classic on the trip rather than the Pocket) <jfred>On that upcoming talk, is it an interview style panel? I saw another speaker listed which made me wonder <dthompson>mnt reform discussion is always spritely related <dthompson>jfred: that other speak is jboy and maybe he or cwebber can answer that <cwebber>I guess I should know that for sure before I get my keynote fully together ;D <cwebber>dthompson: indeed some day I hope we can have an MNT computer be the official Spritely Computer ;) <jfred>I have been thinking a desktop environment version of Navi would be pretty cool someday :P <cwebber>I have heard that Guix can run as the host distro on the rk3588 since the patched kernel is available there though I think you're running Guix-on-Debian still right jfred ? <cwebber>basically Guix home on a Debian base? <jfred>Yeah, still running on the stock Debian distro with Guix on top. I'd still love to get it running Guix System at some point, but I think that'll take some work to integrate some of the community work on that with my own standard system config <jfred>It has had me wishing the Guix world had something like nixos-hardware that had a centralized collection of hardware-specific quirks <jfred>"I'm running on a Reform, give me whatever kernel and bootloader I need for that" <cwebber>I suspect that part of it is that x86 machines, the story really was pretty simple because of bios/uefi <cwebber>uboot based devices is a whole other thing <cwebber>my memory is that uboot is basically "compile a special-hacked uboot for every device" or something else terrible and the last time I looked at it I tried to disable that realization, but here I've resurfaced it <jfred>I think it depends on whether or not some of the drivers for your device have made it into mainline u-boot or something like that (which happens for some devices but does seem to take a lot of work) <cwebber>I don't know much about nixos-hardware but it sounds cool <cwebber>I agree that it would be nice to have more help at getting Guix on things be an easy thing <cwebber>jfred: confirmed, 45-50 minute talk, plus jboy providing an intro and moderating a q&a after <cwebber>so it's mostly a talk with a nice intro and moderated q&a :) <cwebber>thanks so much to jboy for organizing this <cwebber>it seems like it's going to be a very exciting event :) <jboy>it may even be possible to ask questions remotely. I can fjns out. <dthompson>wish I could be there but I will try to catch the stream <jfred>yeah I'll need to look at the timing and stuff but it likely overlaps with family holiday stuff for me. so glad it's being recorded! <dthompson>yeah it's happening on thanksgiving for the US so watching it live may be difficult for me <jfred>2PM US Eastern if I'm getting my timezone conversions right <dthompson>I could use an excuse to travel to the philly/wilmington de area <av0n>if yall host a meetup in/around philly lmk :)
