<nexussfan>ClassiCube hurd support upstreamed! :D
<gnucode>nice!
<gnucode>Someday soon, we'll have our own Hurd minecraft server. That would be super cool!
<nexussfan>Once java runs
<gnucode>oh! We could encourage developers to contribute that way...if you get a commit into the Hurd source code, then you may game with us on our private server. :)
<nexussfan>I haven't commited to hurd source code, but I've ported plenty of things to hurd..
<gnucode>I'd consider porting work as Hurd contributer material. :)
<nexussfan>Probably
<gnucode>also I haven't done any code work for the Hurd either. I've tried. None of the C stuff makes sense to me anytime I've tried. So I do documentation stuff and the qoth.
<nexussfan>Java support is extremely bad on hurd however
<gnucode>I feel like Java is not the greatest open source language. :(
<nexussfan>Yeah
<gnucode>are you a fan of scheme ?
<gnucode>well I'm working on Q1 of 2026. The latest guix blog post might have covered some of the news items, but that's ok.
<nexussfan>I wonder if we can get hurd on https://github.com/vmactions
<jab>woo hoo! I got an account on the debian wiki, so I can add sudo dpkg-reconfigure tz-data. Looks like I'll need to send a patch against: https://salsa.debian.org/webmaster-team/webwml/-/blob/master/english/ports/hurd/hurd-install.wml?ref_type=heads
<jab>oh apparently I already have a salsa git account...so I should be able to clone this sucker and push directly...I'll get samuel's permission before I do so.
<nexussfan>while you're at it you can also fix up the build-deps for mesa
<azeem>jab: you probably can't push directly, but can open a pull request
<nexussfan>^
<jab>most likely. :( by the way, can you send some pictures of any cool games/applications that you have ported to the Hurd ? I'd like to include some cool pictures on the next qoth.
<nexussfan>So far only ClassiCube
<jab>You could just email 'em to bug hurd.
<jab>sounds good!
<nexussfan>not sure if samuel would care much about games on hurd
<nexussfan>in the qoth
<nexussfan>I'm looking for other games i can port however
<jab>I personally would like to hear about it. We should promote people that are porting software to the Hurd. We need more porters. :)
<nexussfan>Yeah, currently porting is more important than working on the actual hurd imo
<jab>and an easy way to find out samuel's opinion is to send a quick email to bug-hurd@gnu.org. :) I'm sure he'd be ok with it. Or perhaps he would request that we link to your blog post or email about it.
<nexussfan>I didn't make a blogpost about it
<nexussfan>but sure, i'll send it to bug-hurd
<jab>sounds good. we'll see what our fearless leader says.
<nexussfan>xD
<jab>this is a bit odd for me...
<jab>following this web page:
<jab> https://www.debian.org/devel/website/using_git
<jab>I uploaded my ssh key, and I'm trying to clone the repo...
<jab> git clone git@salsa.debian.org:webmaster-team/webwml.git
<jab>I now see a directory webwml...but it's empty. and I had to C-c the clone command. it never indicated that it finished or did anything, other than create an empty directory. Those there is a .git directory.
<jab>ssh -T git@salsa.debian.org -> Welcome to Gitlab, @gnucode
<jab>so I guess it sort of works... idk
<jab>I'll just https clone for now.
<jab> https://store.hurdos.com -> there's nothing there yet, but there will be eventually.
<nexussfan>I wanna buy a hurd vps :)
<gnucode>The Hurd rocks!
<jab>Just as soon as I set one up!
<jab>nexussfan: I do have a guix-hosting.com account. I could set you up with a child hurd if you like.
<jab>no idea how fast it would be.
<nexussfan>Oh wow
<jab>I'd happily let you try it for free. I haven't touched that server since I bought it. And the performance is probably pretty bad. but I don't know.
<nexussfan>Thanks
<nexussfan>I don't mind much if it's slow
<nexussfan>My current server is only 10GB storage + 1GB ram + 1core so
<jab>ok, feel free to send me your ssh key.
<jab>i believe that irc supports private messages if you like to sent it privately.
<nexussfan>Yeah it does
<jab>nexussfan: do you plan to run a website ? gaming server ?
<nexussfan>Probably just a website on the hurd :D
<nexussfan>Maybe some other stuff
<nexussfan>I'm used to low resources servers anyway
<jab>fyi, guix only has 200 packages built for the Hurd...
<jab>so you may be compiling a ton of packages from source. :(
<jab>do you still want access ?
<nexussfan>sure
<nexussfan>i'd prefer amd64 but i386 is okay as well
<nexussfan>I've actually never really used guix xD
<gnucode>guix is actually really nice! I would still use it today, but Theo has me convinced that OpenBSD is the mother of all secure operating systems. I'm hoping that I can apply some of OpenBSD's security policies onto the Hurd.
<nexussfan>Yeah, I know guix is good for mass deployments because of it's reproducable configs
<nexussfan>You don't need stuff like docker compose on guix
<jab>well I may have deleted the credentials to log into my guix-hosting server...
<nexussfan>xd
<jab>I'll probably have to email the guy in charge.
<jab>actually .ssh_authorized users may have it...
<nexussfan>authorized_keys i think
<jab>actually knows_hosts ... maybe
<nexussfan>yeah probably that
<jab>authorized_keys is empty
<jab>yup I have to email the guy again...
<nexussfan>I'm surprised it doesn't come with serial console in case ssh is not working
<jab>I'm sure that it does have something like that. I just deleted all of my inbox yesterday...the info was probably there.
<nexussfan>Oof
<yang>Hello, I am trying the installation on a HP laptop
<yang>I have chosen the netinstall image
<yang>it goes into installer, but then after keymap selection I get dropped onto the screen which says 1-installer, 2-shell, 3-shell, 4-log....and its trying to re-read the CD-ROM, but doesn't get any further?
<yang>jab: any idea?
