<gnucode>damo22: that is true...however the last time I tried that....I couldn't get my T400 to boot.
<gnucode>It probably does work, but finding the right grub incantation is a little tricky.
<damo22>yea, i tried writing a grub module to make it easier
<gnucode>damo22: I saw that.
<damo22>but the installed disk should come with grub.cfg
<damo22>it may need a slight tweak for hd0 / sd0 or somehting
<damo22>but otherwise should boot
<damo22>if you have a t400, i suggest using that, its way more powerful than a t60
<gnucode>I'll give it a try again.
<gnucode>thanks
<damo22>i suggest transplanting a disk from a working hurd
<gnucode>damo22: hahaha....My T43 is a working disk...but it is not SATA. It's whatever was before SATA...PATA ?
<damo22>oh ok
<damo22>do you have a sata disk somewhere?
<damo22>you could buy a $5 usb caddy for it and use dd to copy the contents of your IDE disk to the SATA one over USB
<damo22>then you wouldnt need to do a full reinstall
<gnucode>damo22: hmmmm.
<gnucode>so I would power on my Hurd running on the T43.
<gnucode>at the same time...I would boot up an GNU/Linux installer with an ssh server built in and running...
<gnucode>Then on the GNU/Linux installer I would ssh into the T43, and run a dd command...
<gnucode>does that sound right?
<damo22>gnucode: i mean, hurd has usb driver you could plug in the second disk via usb and dd the running hurd disk onto the usb -> sata disk
<damo22>all running on hurd
<damo22>then when the transfer is complete, take the sata disk out of the caddy and insert it into the blank t400
<damo22>this would work so long as the sata disk has at least as much capacity as the ide disk
<gnucode>damo22: oh...I didn't know that was working already...well I guess I was just reading about rumpusbdisk...silly me
<gnucode>damo22: my T43 has 1.5 GB of ram...does rumpusbdisk use a lot of memory?
<damo22>gnucode: worst case you can boot off a GNU/Linux live usb stick and do the copy in linux instead
<damo22>the main question is if you have a sata disk that fits in the t400
<damo22>gnucode: the only thing you might need to buy is one of these https://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51Ao-pEVeYL.jpg
<damo22>i find it terribly useful for developing hurd too
<damo22>because you can run qemu using the usb device and also plug the same disk into a real pc
<damo22>so you can easily test from qemu -> real hw the same image
<damo22>you dont need the installer all the time
<gnucode>damo22: I can find a SATA SSD that fits in the T400. What is that image? A usb caddy?
<damo22>have a look
<gnucode>I'm looking at the image. I'll see if I can purchase whatever that thing is somewhere.
<damo22>just search up "usb to sata dongle" in duckduckgo images
<gnucode>thanks
<gnucode>gotcha
<gnucode>that's super cheap.
<damo22>the startech one is good quality
<damo22>might be a bit more than the cheapest one
<gnucode>ok. but good quality is worth it.
<damo22>but ive had some problems with cheapo usb sata dongles dropping out or reconnecting
<damo22>the startech one is pretty solid
