<gnucode>hey hurd people! I really borked my Hurd laptop today. <gnucode>I was updating the machine, when the X lock screen turned on. When I tried to log back in...the system seemed to freeze. I assumed that the Hurd was still updating in the background, but I could not log in. <gnucode>I waited for about 10 minutes or so, gave up, and hard shut off the machine. <gnucode>When I rebooted, I was unable to fsck the filesystem. the normal boot was interupted by "filesystem not mounted cleanly. enter the root password or C-D to continue." I entered the root password, and tried to fsck.ext2 /dev/hd0s1. <gnucode>Well, I wasn't even able to do that! Basically, "ls" failed to work. Then delete failed to work. <gnucode>Then when I was typing, weird utf8 symbols started appearing. Things got weird! :) <gnucode>Basically the T43's root filesystem was soo garbled that I couldn't fix it. <gnucode>But then I had a genius idea! I booted the Hurd installer, and fsck-ed the root filesystem via the rescue option, which I am glad to say worked! <kilobug>you could try to boot an installer or live image (of GNU/Hurd or GNU/Linux) and to fsck the filesystem from it, but if it's deeply corrupted, I fear that won't be enough <gnucode>I am actually typing this on the fixed T43! <gnucode>kilobug: actually, apt saved my bacon. <gnucode>Once the filesystem was fixed, I tried to perform the upgrade in the console...there's no lock screen to cause issues there. <gnucode>apt gave me a weird error message like, "Something really wrong Jim. try apt --configure -y to fix." <kilobug>I usually do all my upgrades instead GNU screen, so in case I loss the GUI during the upgrade, I can still ssh to the box from another box and reattach the screen from it <gnucode>I forget what the command was, but it re-installed all the basic stuff that I needed to get it all working again. <gnucode>kilobug: do you know how to disable the X lock screen on Debian GNU/Hurd ? <gnucode>that would probably help me out a lot, because I have gotten stock on that lock screen before. <kilobug>that probably depends of the desktop envrionment you are using <gnucode>Feel free to respond, but I really need to go to bed. I'll be sure to check the logs for anyone's answer. Also I'm probably going to send out the Q3 qoth soon for review. <kilobug>i3 itself doesn't have any lock screen, so it's probably GNOME's or Mate's or whatever that is called from it, it would depend on your config... <gnucode>ThinkT510: solid_black got it working, but it's very experimental. <gnucode>wayland needs an OpenGL implementation to work? (I could be wrong on that). <gnucode>It needs DRM I think as well to work well... <gnucode>I don't think there are any Hurd developers that are actively working on porting the Hurd to wayland. It's possible, but we are not there yet. <gnucode>sweet, I was able to disable the X lock screen. Hopefully I'll have less X issues. <gnucode>hey friends! My T400 replacement DVD drive just arrived in the mail. I should be able to try booting the Hurd installer on the T400 and giving it a spin this weekend!
