<aswjrisp>I was looking at the Hurd website. The most recent usability report is 2013
<aswjrisp>How is Hurd to use currently?
<aswjrisp>on real hardware
<aswjrisp>not virtual machines
<damo22>if you can make it boot, it works fine usually
<aswjrisp>damo22: Is it difficult to make it boot?
<damo22>depends on hardware i mean
<damo22>it boots on some old thinkpads for example
<aswjrisp>damo22: probably librebootable thinkpads.
<damo22> but some drivers are missing i think
<aswjrisp>Is there a list of supported hardware.
<damo22>not that i am aware
<aswjrisp>damo22: Do you know which thinkpads work?
<damo22>i had it running on a x200
<damo22>it should mostly work on x220 and x230 (network driver missing)
<damo22>anything older than x200 should work
<aswjrisp>Would networking work if you plugged in an ethernet cable?
<damo22>no
<damo22>theres no wifi support at all
<damo22>i meant wired
<aswjrisp>No internet with wifi or ethernet cable.
<damo22>yeah, basically offline
<damo22>x200 works though with ethernet cable
<aswjrisp>How about thinkpad t500 or w500?
<damo22>same as x200 really
<damo22>theyre almost identical hardware
<aswjrisp>That is great to hear.
<damo22>i havent tested it myself though
<aswjrisp>What is used as a package manager or is everything built from source?
<aswjrisp>I guess a package manager is at a different level, the os level.
<aswjrisp>What operating system work on hurd?
<aswjrisp>I saw there is something about debian, arch and guix.
<aswjrisp>Or so alis tells me there are hurd related channels for those operating systems.
<Gooberpatrol66>debian and guix, the arch distro is not maintained
<aswjrisp>How are debian and guix on hurd?
<Gooberpatrol66>debian's most up to date probably, guix packages are from 2023
<Gooberpatrol66>also guix doesnt provide a bare metal image, you have to build it
<Gooberpatrol66>but guix has childhurds which are cool
<aswjrisp>childhurds?
<aswjrisp>Is Debian on Hurd on bare metal?
<Gooberpatrol66> https://guix.gnu.org/en/blog/2020/childhurds-and-substitutes/
<Gooberpatrol66>you can do bare metal or vm
<aswjrisp>damo22: Gooberpatrol66: thanks
