<vagrantc>ci.guix.gnu.org seems to have stalled out again :(
<vagrantc>no evaluations for 18 hours, last push to master a few hours ago
<ieure>Question, I swapped the SSD from one Guix machine into a different computer. It boots to a bare GRUB prompt instead of showing me the menu. Any idea why it'd do that instead of show the boot menu and start up?
<ieure>UUIDs should all be the same, I think, since it's the same disk.
<ieure>Yeah, this is weird. This is a very simple setup, GPT partitioning, ext4, and no LUKS.
<ieure>I did `insmod ext2' in grub, but it doesn't recognize the filesystems at all.
<ieure>Recognizes the /boot partition it loaded grub from, but not the swap or root fs.
<bjc>efi or mbr?
<bjc>and, if efi, are you sure that you have the right drive selected in the efi boot menu?
<ieure>EFI. It's the only drive in the system, presumably GRUB would not have gotten loaded off the SSD's /boot if I'd picked the wrong one.
<bjc>i gotta ask
<bjc>the boot menu config for grub lives on the esp, so i otherwise don't know why it wouldn't show up
<ieure>bjc, grub.cfg lives in /boot for LUKS setups, I don't have one on this disk. Strangely, I do have a /boot/Debian? I have no idea how/why, I formatted this disk when I installed it.
<ieure>But /boot/debian has some GRUB stuff on it, and the boot menu only offers me a "debian" choice. So I think it's loading the wrong thing.
<ieure>And perhaps this grub is too old to know about ext4? Seems kind of unlikely, but it's all I've got.
<ieure>Will see if grub on an installer image can boot the system.
<bjc>the same esp can contain many bootloaders, so it's possible that you have more than one grub installed and the wrong one is being chosen at boot
<ieure>Yeah, I think that's what's happening.
<ieure>I booted from a Guix installer image and was able to point it to the grub.cfg and get the system booted.
<ieure>Reconfiguring now to see if that resolves things. But I think the actual issue is that the ESP isn't mounted on /boot like it should be. Maybe.
<bjc>if you can bring up a boot menu in your efi, it should list them all, though not necessarily helpfully
<ieure>The root FS has /boot with grub.cfg and such, but the ESP has only the GRUB EFI payload, and the weird Debian booter.
<bjc>i don't mount my esp on boot, i put it in /boot/esp in order to more easily dual boot with nix, but you need to be explicit about that
<ieure>I am now in "how did any of this every work" territory.
<ieure>I don't dual boot anything.
<bjc>were i you, i'd try to mount the partition and just look at everything it contains and suss it out from there
<bjc>but yeah, it's easy for it to get messy
<bjc>my expectation is that you have multiple directories in there under /boot
<ieure>I have it up and on the network, which makes this easier.
<ieure>Thing is really slow... Wasn't expecting that. :(
<ieure>(It's a "ThinkCentre M90n-1 Fan" with a 10th gen i3; replacing an M720q Tiny with 8th gen i5)
<bjc>i still haven't got it in me to put linux on a laptop and use it as my regular computer
<bjc>the only ones i have around here are macbooks, and previous attempts didn't go well
<bjc>turns out, though, that if you never leave the house, a desktop is fine =)
<cdegroot_>bjc: macbooks work great as RDP clients for Linux desktops ;-)
<bjc>heh
<stephen>my 2011 macbook air took guix pretty well -- years ago I had removed the internal nic though, so I was using an atheros dongle
<rly>Hi, I'm using guix again on my desktop after a few years of not having time to play around with it much. Is there a way to set common cli options like substitute servers or number of parallel build jobs so I don't have to retype them? I can set up shell aliases but was wondering if there was a config file that guix reads or something. I'm not running guix on guix system
<rly>Ah nevermind I missed the bit in the manual where it mentions the GUIX_BUILD_OPTIONS variable
<sneek>untrusem: Greetings
<mra>hey! is anyone aware of a robust way to replace the system guix with a patched version? i've tried following the instructions at https://guix.gnu.org/manual/1.5.0/en/html_node/Customizing-the-System_002dWide-Guix.html, using `options->transformation` to create a transformation which patches a package, and then using `(my-transformation guix)` to replace guix in guix-service type
<mra>unfortunately this doesn't seem to work. guix builds the patched guix and puts it in the store, but when i run `guix` at the command line, i get an unpatched version
<sham1>mra: it's probably your user's guix instead of the system-wide one
<untrusem>sneek: botsnack
<sneek>:)
<yarl>Hi civodul. I don't really understand the last comment on the review for #12205. I mean, I think I have been pretty explicit in the commit message, I also add a comment at line 669. I don't understand why you say it's not related to super options.
<yarl>And about your comment just above on the two separate parameters, this is kind of to make this filesystem/mount-point interpretation explicit.
<yarl>What do you think?
<yarl>(only try to reach you there to gain some time in mutual comprehension)
<yarl>I'll answer/ask in the PR itself now.
<yarl>Well, codeberg seems dead.
<cbaines>it's undergoing maintenance https://social.anoxinon.de/@codebergstatus
<yarl>sneek: later ask civodul Did you see https://codeberg.org/guix/guix/pulls/12354? I think you closed 7373 without seeing it.
<sneek>Will do.
<mra>sham1: sorry for the late reply. what do you mean by the user's guix as opposed to the system-wide guix?
<citadel>I'm having trouble getting pinentry-gnome3 to work. When I try to invoke it through a terminal it always falls back to pinentry-tty (or curses idunno which). However, if I use pinentry-qt I have no issues. I'm running dwl as my window manager.
<untrusem>pinentry and guix :)
<untrusem>citadel: are you using home-gpg-agent service?
<citadel>yup, using guix home with home-gpg-agent-service-type
<jlicht>hey guix
