<mra>ieure: sorry to bug you, but out of curiosity, what bootloader do you use on your Guix ZFS system? <sham1>Grub should be able to boot from ZFS, IIRC <bjc>the grub zfs code is ancient, and doesn't necessarily work with modern pools <bjc>and don't be surprised if “zpool upgrade” makes your system unbootable <mra>bjc: yeah, GRUB very much doesn't work, that's why I'm asking <bjc>you may not like this answer, but my opinion is that you're best off running zfs on freebsd and using a network mount on linux <bjc>that's how i've been doing it for many years and as long as your network is fast, it works pretty well and has none of the heartache of using zfs on linux <DragonMaus>mra: doesn't look like it's available in guix packages, but zfsbootmenu works really well <DragonMaus>I've been using it on my void system with encrypted zfs root for years without any issue <mra>bjc: oh, I know, I just want to see if I can do root on ZFS, since hako has done a lot of cool work on it <mra>DragonMaus: I would like to see if I can get zfsbootmenu working! <bjc>i'm not going to argue too strongly against you, but i did try zfs on linux for years and while it worked 95% of the time, that's not good enough for my filesystem <bjc>it works 100% of the time on freebsd with no jank <bjc>count yourself lucky then <mra>bjc: that's entirely fair! I've been using ZFS on Linux for years and I've never had any issues, so I've been very happy with it. I've also used it on freebsd and it's great there for sure <mra>regardless, I think that Guix users having more options is always a good thing <bjc>sure. you may recall i have an ancient patch sitting around to try and pave the way for zfs at boot time <bjc>i'm not against it, but i do have reservations <pdpnw>I think I read over those email threads while setting up a ZFS pool for my NAS <apteryx>lilyp: I've incorporated the openjdk bootstrap changes to gnome-team, fixed up some commits with newer variants I had, and rebased on master. Looks like we're in for a large rebuild, hopefully the last one. <mra>having a new weird issue. fixed my driver issues from yesterday by just switching to the non-free kernel. now when I boot, I get all the way the the login prompt (yay!) but there doesn't appear to be a cursor anywhere, and typing on my keyboard doesn't do anything <untrusem>maybe its firmware, you can ask in nonguix i suppose <mra>untrusem: I'm just not sure if it's a nonguix issue or not. like, surely I'm not missing firmware for a usb keyboard... <mra>I'm so close but so far! after a bunch of work I've managed to get this system to boot all the way to the login screen, but I can't type a damned username! <cnx>mra, do you boot to tty or a graphical display manager? <cnx>big sad, could you enable ssh to take a poke from another machine? <cnx>looking at boot logs or so <mra>cnx: that's probably the right thing to do, I'm just not sure I have the patience for it at the moment... <cnx>time is a social construct, nothing wrong with letting it marinate for a couple months d-; <gnufairy>This keeps happening every so often and its very annoying <mra>got it working! stupid mistake on my part <mra>I have a working guix system on ZFS! super cool! <untrusem>gnufairy: why are you pulling without substitutes btw? <davidlee>hey is this the right place to get talked out of switching from nixos to like nix on guix? I can't tell if it's the stupidest idea or something people live regret-free lives doing <gnufairy>Well the host system is gentoo and so I want to keep up with the source based stuff untrusem <mra>untrusem: I'm honestly not very sure. I just started ripping out packages from the config until it worked <mra>I had meant to base my install on bare-bones.scm, but accidentally used desktop.scm instead. something I pulled in from there was causing a problem <Icy-Thought>davidlee: it's not stupid, but what do you need nix for, if I may ask. <untrusem>gnufairy: ?? I don't know know how that relates to you not using substitutes :p <mra>untrusem: yep! now I just need to flesh out this install into a working system. it's still janky for sure, but it works <mra>to boot, I have to manually copy the kernel and the initrd onto the boot partition, and then modify the GRUB configuration to refer to those copies <mra>untrusem: I've left some comments on hako's pull request discussing my experiments <mra>I'll write something more comprehensive up once I figure out how to deal with booting being janky <gnufairy>untusem not using subs means building from source which is consistent with Gentoo's idea... Anyway more importantly how do I get around this persitent git error <Icy-Thought>lilyp: late response since I don't have a perserved history somehow :S but yeah maple-mono <untrusem>guix ci web frontend always gives me pain
