<haugh>noxi, no, gpt
<haugh>EFI, swap, and root parts
<noxi>hmm. can you try to find a minimal reproducible example for your (guix ui) issue? chopping progressively some parts of your config
<haugh>all day i have been doing so
<noxi>have you tried with a blank config? Nothing but (operating-system) (and what's essential for operating-system to instantiate)
<haugh>Can I do that interactively from guix repl?
<haugh>How do i directly instantiate an os object?
<noxi>No, for example a minimal-system.scm with something like that :
<noxi>(use-modules (gnu))
<noxi>(operating-system
<noxi> (host-name "minimal")
<noxi> (keyboard-layout (keyboard-layout "us" "altgr-intl"))
<noxi> (bootloader (bootloader-configuration
<noxi> (bootloader grub-efi-bootloader)
<noxi> (targets '("/efi"))
<sham1>People should always remember to use the pastebins
<ente>I feel it depends on whether or not the channel is busy or not
<ente>if it's just crickets then it's fine to paste
<ente>but ymmv
<ente>but probably you shouldn't paste the entire minimal-system.scm ^^
<noxi>i always forget this is linked to IRC and looks like dog food on the other side
<haugh>noxi, reconfiguring against an extremely minimal system is pulling down a ton of updates but I will certainly follow up with you
<noxi>don't reconfigure entirely
<noxi>you can CTRL-C once you see it doesn't trigger the (guix ui)
<haugh>But the guix ui backtrace is only triggered after the build
<haugh>and I cant launch vms
<noxi>When is it triggered?
<haugh>depends on whether I delete the guix cache
<haugh>Wait a minute. Maybe -L isn't doing what I think
<haugh>I want my config file to have access to my home dorectory, so i've been passing "-L ~" to guix system reconfigure, like a guile process
<haugh>Now this did work at least once but I can't see it in the manual
<haugh>excuse my typos, I'm on mobile because all my computers are running broken guix system installations
<vagrantc>ente: people reading backlog will thank you for always using a pastebin, no matter how "quiet" it is
<vagrantc>hrm. ci has been tossing "bad gateway 502" for almost a whole day...
<vagrantc>i hope it is still quietly building things...
<vagrantc>ci.guix.gnu.org, that is
<haugh>could FDE be interfering with how guix reads my partition table?
<ente>people reading backlog love clicking on pastes and find them expired, too!
<ente>my threshold for paste is >4 lines
<ente>anyway, not gonna debate this any further since it's a waste of everyone's time
<noxi>No, I think it's definitely that -L thing, haugh
<haugh>So how do you point a guile module to a directory when you're accessing it via guix?
<haugh>it being the module
<sham1>What do you mean by that? You add the directory to your load path with -L and then you import the module as you would with any guile module
<haugh>yeah that's what I do, but noxi is saying that's wrong
<lechner>What did noxi write?
<haugh>19:11:17 <noxi> No, I think it's definitely that -L thing, haugh
<lechner>I'll be honest with you. My first two month with Guix were sheer terror. Please have hope.
<haugh>I understand that but I am literally out of money
<sham1>What is actually the issue with your system reconfigure
<lechner>Guix is free.
<haugh>My time isn't free
<lechner>Neither is mine.
<haugh>sham1, it throws a useless backtrace
<lechner>That's Guile for you. You could run in a REPL instead.
<vagrantc>yeah, guile and guix are prone to inscrutible backtraces
<haugh>How do I interactively instantiate an operating-system?
<sham1>That's the neat part, you don't
<sham1>Like, you could look at guix/scripts/system/reconfigure.scm and figure out how it does what it does, but other than that, you don't really have that many ways of actually doing the reconfigure interactively
<haugh>Please understand I am taking extreme pains to be polite and helpful and it's still coming off angry because I have invested years (including my guile study) into this ecosystem and I don't have a working computer to show for it.
<haugh>This desktop was supposed to be a clean start lol
<lechner>Why do you use -L instead of pulling? Is that a way to modify the Guix checkout?
<lechner>Also, are you trying to be helpful, or are the rest of us trying to be helpful?
<haugh>I use -L to point the guile process at a module tree, and I don't believe comparing contributions is in the spirit of the community guidelines.
<sham1>Well ain't that vague
<lechner>Okay, will you please elaborate on your understanding of how I violated the community guidelines?
<lechner>The issue with -L is that we don't know which code is failing.
<haugh>Alright, good evening, guilers.
<vagrantc>i don't even like guile.
<vagrantc>the awful backtraces that usually reference something entirely unrelated to what code is actually broken being top of the list why ...
<theesm>g'day guix o/
<gnufairy1>Has anyone been able to get boot up penguins? I just got my custom kernel config to work on my GNU Guix System, the boot up screen flickers but then resumes normal boot with no penguins.
<gnufairy1>The same kernel config works with boot up penguins on Gentoo. You can check it out at https://codeberg.org/gnufairy/General-Dotfiles.git/kernels
<gnufairy1>Wait that link doesn't work, go to https://codeberg.org/gnufairy/General-Dotfiles into the kernels folder
