<haugh>Why did limiting my reconfigure to one core prevent a guile exception in (guix ui)?
<haugh>Oh I have to keep doing it that way or I get the samw error.
<haugh>Oh no it only worked the one time and not anymore
<haugh>How reproducible
<haugh>Well
<haugh>I am once again asking how it is possible for a reproducible operating system to fail a system upgrade.
<haugh>I meam is this whole distribution an elaborate nerd-sniping tactic or what? Am I an idiot for believing that this was a good thing to invest years of technical debt into?
<haugh>I learned a major programming language in order to use this distro and I can't upgrade it!
<sham1>Unfortunately the universe is less reproducible than the distro
<haugh>I apologize for venting in here
<AKArien>Hi there, using guix on a debian system, i was wondering how to set the locale for guix ? I can’t seem to find wiki resources for doing that.
<lechner>haugh: Thanks for the apology! All good.
<mra>AKArien: https://guix.gnu.org/manual/1.5.0/en/guix.html#Locales
<mra>"Additional locale definitions can be specified in the locale-definitions slot of operating-system"
<sham1>They said "on a debian system". No operating-system record there
<mra>oh, misread that, thought they were saying they had switched from debian to guix
<mra>sorry!
<bremner>I remember some output from guix pull about environment related to locales...
<bremner>export GUIX_LOCPATH="$HOME/.guix-profile/lib/locale"
<bremner>there was some other information about installing a guix package. Let's see if it happens again...
<AKArien>bremner thanks, that was it !
<bremner>hurray!
<Heterochromium>If a Guix upgrade gets interrupted due to lack of disk space, how do I clean up old packages without deleting the packages that I just downloaded?
<SurfingOnBytes>guess I am lost, but where does one submit icon themes? I cannot seem to find a unified place for them
<SurfingOnBytes>Also, do we have to do something like nix's adding yourself to the maintainers list ?
<SurfingOnBytes>I assume not on the last one since I have not seen one reference like (maintainers user)
<haugh>Backtrace on reconfig after deleting cache and running on a single core. Two channels. Does anyone here pin the badboy channel? https://paste.c-net.org/WittyJodie
<haugh>sneek seen lilyp
<sneek>lilyp was last seen in #guile 14 days ago, saying: old: probably because _API means public?.
<haugh>That means we're due for a sighting!
<haugh>sneek later tell lilyp girl wwyd? https://paste.c-net.org/WittyJodie
<sneek>Okay.
<haugh>sneek put me out of my misery
<haugh>feh, and they say automation is boundless
<untrusem>haugh: can you your share your config too in a pastebin
<untrusem>what is your .guile contents btw
<haugh>complex multi-machine config spread across multiple files and lots of it is private for now. I can answer specific questions. .guile is the default guix-generated sexp on this machine: https://paste.c-net.org/HollowayFlirted
<yarl>hi
<alteregon>o/
<sham1>\o
<cbaines>csantosb, are you good to merge https://codeberg.org/guix/guix/pulls/11852 shortly? It's needed to unbreak data.guix.gnu.org and data.qa.guix.gnu.org
<kestrelwx>Hi!
<avalenn>are --container and --profile of guix shell incompatible ?
<avalenn>I have an exception when using both options at the same time : https://paste.debian.net/hidden/303ba324
<csantosb>Morning Guix !
<csantosb>Any idea about where exactly !11729 is gone ?
<csantosb>I still have it in my local emacs-forgejo cache
<abrenon>avalenn: must be something with the content of your profile or a typo somewhere because I was able to create a profile and then shell into it with the --container option
<kestrelwx>csantosb: The contributor asked to delete it because of LLM content. https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/guix-devel/2026-10/msg00083.html
<yarl>abrenon: try guix shell --profile=./.direnv/guix-profiles/guix-profile --container instead of guix shell --profile=./.direnv/guix-profiles/guix-profile/ --container
<abrenon>yarl: what? the order can matter?!
<yarl>ah sorry
<yarl>"guix shell --profile=./.direnv/guix-profiles/guix-profile --container"
<abrenon>oh, worked here with guix shell -p /tmp/test --container
<yarl>yes
<yarl>the /
<yarl>the last /
<abrenon>ok we have a replication :)
<abrenon>what?! that's so silly, why can't we support the full dirname with the trailing slash included?
<yarl>Look if there's n issue about that or open one.
<yarl>Or make a PR.
<yarl>;)
<abrenon>already on it :)
<avalenn>abrenon: thanks, will try it
<yarl>avalenn: try with --profile=./.direnv/guix-profiles/guix-profile
<yarl>instead of --profile=./.direnv/guix-profiles/guix-profile/
<abrenon>what? no, you can't thank me, I only added confusion and mistook yarl's suggestion for a parameter order thing when it was just the trailing /
<avalenn>I inverted reading between yarl and abrenon, my eyes are tired
<abrenon>ACTION goes into hiding (and perhaps find or open that PR)
<yarl>And I firstly answered to abrenon when I should have answered to you, avalenn. :)
<avalenn>you were right the trailing slash was the problem, but it works without --container
<yarl>ouch
<abrenon>Oo
<yarl>This needs to be fixed. abrenon's on it.
<yarl>;)
<abrenon>ACTION said she would try to look into it, but that report's making it seem like it won't be that easy
<yarl>abrenon: if you can't, can you at least make an issue?
<yarl>or avalenn?
<abrenon>yeah I will
<yarl>Thank you
<abrenon>I've spent some time browsing the issues and PRs, I don't see anything similar reported
<abrenon>which seems weird, like it seems too big for no one to have noticed it before
<untrusem>sneek later tell csantob can you check your mail :)
<sneek>Will do.
<csantosb>cbaines: done !
<untrusem>lol
<haugh>Does guix provide any tests we can use to validate a complex operating-system object before launching a long reconfiguration?
<haugh>the idea of going through my whole config and disabling one piece at a time to narrow this down does not exactly spark joy
<meaty>these is guix system vm iirc
<meaty>and guix system build for basic validation
<csantosb>guix system vm /etc/config.scm
<csantosb> https://guix.gnu.org/manual/devel/en/html_node/Getting-Started-with-the-System.html
<untrusem>csantosb: I didn't got any mail, you haven't replied or forgot to cc ?
<JackTheRipper>Hi. I'm trying to configure kak-tree-sitter to use the grammars I installed through guix itself. So far I figured out how to point kak-tree-sitter to the location of my grammar files inside `~/.guix-home/profile/lib/tree-sitter`. But I also need to provide a location for tree-sitter queries (files with scm extension) so that I can have syntax
<JackTheRipper>highlighting. But where are they? I can't find any highlight.scm file for the language grammars I've installed inside my home directory. I'm installing and configuring all of this inside home manager. I can find some queries inside the store, but I need a constant path that I can hardcode into kak-tree-sitter's config file.
<JackTheRipper>Where are tree sitter query files located when installed through guix home?
<abrenon>avalenn: yarl I just opened the issue https://codeberg.org/guix/guix/issues/11871
<avalenn>great
<avalenn>is it possible to run docker inside a guix container ?
<yarl>Thanks abrenon !
<graywolf>Hi, question, what is Guix's "canonical" SSL library? We package all of OpenSSL, LibreSSL, GnuTLS, wolfSSL and possibly more. If program supports multiple, are there guidelines which one should I pick?
<yarl>graywolf: I suppose the guideline is up to that program, no?
<cnx>as guix is still under gnu, i think the canonical answer is gnutls
<cnx>but it's pretty much up to the contributor that does the packaging
<graywolf>yarl: If it supports just one, sure, but it multiple are (claimed to be) equally supported, I need to pick one.
<cnx>i don't think any reviewer would block a patch just because it choose to link against openssl instead of gnutls for example
<apteryx>graywolf: I'd say gnutls, for historical GNU reasons, and its Guile support. It also has the better certs mechanism out of the bunch (via p11-kit)
<sneek>Welcome back apteryx, you have 1 message!
<sneek>apteryx, jlicht says: would you be able to get the javascript-team merge dance started anytime this week? Otherwise, I should be able to do so next week
<yarl>I guess the most suitable option is to choose the library that's already the most present.
<graywolf>Ok, thanks for input all :)
<yarl>Hi apteryx, did you see my tiny review on #11714?
<apteryx>I hadn't (about the extraneous srfi-2 addition). Probably a left over. I'll check and push, if that's fine?
<yarl>I guess :)
<yarl>depends if https://codeberg.org/guile/guile/pulls/308 is accepted soon
<apteryx>jlicht: I may not have the time, but the dance has already started (we have a merge request queued for a long time) :-). I'll try reviewing your pending changes.
<yarl>but it's a small dchange anyway.
<civodul>cnx: GnuTLS left the GNU project a decade ago… in general don’t read too much into that :-)
<lechner>graywolf: wolfSSL is by far the smallest of those libraries. They also implement features faster, but I'm partial since I worked there.
<lechner>wolfSSL was the TLS library of MySQL AB, but Oracle didn't want that team.
<tusharhero-xmpp>How does sneek work?
<lechner>It relays messages when users reappear here.
<lechner>graywolf: You are already using wolfSSL. It's probably in your washing machine and in your dad's car. It's prolific.
<yarl>What is the point of readlink* (defined in guix/utils and _copied_ in gnu/packages/ld-wrapper.in, gnu/build/linux-modules.scm and gnu/build/hurd-boot.scm) when there is canonicalize-path.
<yarl>?
<yarl>Besides, if readlink* is used for cache keys, something/../thing cal lead to the same thing as something-else/thing.
<yarl>e.g.
<yarl>s/cal/can/
<kev45223>hello, i'm trying to install xorg for exwm without a login manager, when using 'startx' i'm getting xauthority errors (saying some random file is missing), but sx actually launches xorg (and exwm) but my mouse and keyboard aren't working ... i don't know how to fix it
<kev45223>here's my configs https://paste.debian.net/hidden/41d0ab14
<graywolf>kev45223: `Your requested paste entry '41d0ab14' could not be found'; anyway, are you using startx-command-service-type or home-startx-command-service-type ?
<kestrelwx>I do see the paste following the link.
<graywolf>Well that is fucking great. Instread of giving me some error saying "you are on VPN, fuck off", they just give back 404? Come ooooon... :(
<kev45223>how about now https://paste.debian.net/hidden/bdcd1e70
<graywolf>This one works, weird.
<kev45223>graywolf: no, i'm not using startx-command, i was planning to use sx
<kestrelwx>graywolf: Do you see 404 on the origina link still?
<kev45223>i've installed emacs, exwm, xf86-input-libinput .... in guix home, i was planning to reduce packages installed as root
<kestrelwx>I tried through Tor and another proxy and I can see it.
<graywolf>huh, now even the first one works;
<graywolf>Right, I did not read the second part of your question.. I do not use sx, but the describe symptoms look like permission errors; Is anything interesting in thelogs?
<yarl>apteryx: you didn't remove srfi-2?
<apteryx>I did
<yarl>Strange, still there on https://codeberg.org/guix/guix/pulls/11714/files but not in the actual commit.
<yarl>Thank you anyway :)
<kev45223>graywolf: here's the startx error, https://paste.debian.net/hidden/61ddc989
<kev45223>the logs are pretty weird, it's complaining about lack of drivers and permissions https://paste.debian.net/hidden/8fd3696a
<cnx>ah thanks, civodul
<cnx>tusharhero-xmpp, you can pm the bot for its help
<dariqq>what kind of black magic is 'man 4 pts'
<untrusem>ACTION looks
<untrusem>which package is it from?
<cnx>linux
<dariqq>Re TLS libraries wasnt there a licensing issue in debian with linking git/GPL software to openssl?
<cnx>openssl 3 is under asl2 i think
<untrusem>cnx, then why don't I have a manpage for it
<dariqq>asl2 is still incompatible with gpl2 if i remember correctly (and git is gpl2-only)
<cnx>sorry, untrusem, man -w pts got me man-pages instead
<cnx>which is linux-specific tho
<cnx>huh
<cnx>ah thanks, dariqq
<dariqq>and by black magic I meant forcefully giving my user shepherd back a controlling tty
<cnx>what is that for?
<dariqq> https://codeberg.org/shepherd/shepherd/issues/158
<dariqq>or more generally why O_NOCTTY exists and people recommend double forking for background daemons
<lechner>sneek / later tell kev45223 / ping me for an xinit that works
<sneek>Okay.
<lechner>dariqq / interesting
<civodul>apteryx: when GnuTLS is configured with p11-kit, /etc/ssl/certs & co. are completely ignored, right?
<civodul>i’m seeing another distro where wget doesn’t even try to access /etc/ssl/certs
<civodul>but the Guix HTTP client (time-machine, download, etc.) does /etc/ssl/certs as it always did
<dariqq>civodul: In theory p11kit is runtime configurable where the trust paths are but gnutls does not seem to load the config files correctly
<kestrelwx> /join #gliver
<kestrelwx>Alright...
<kestrelwx>haugh: I think you're seeing the same problem as https://codeberg.org/guix/guix/issues/11846.
<riabenko>guix upgrade caused an unexpected download: qtdeclarative-6.9.2-debug 877.5MiB
<untrusem>lol
<untrusem>riabenko: welcome to qtdeclarative :)
<untrusem>its non unexpected
<untrusem>some package in your profile requires it
<Heterochromium>Is it possible to modularize a system/home configuration?
<Heterochromium>For example, suppose I want to include GNOME, Plasma, and Xfce, but I don't want to write `(service gnome-desktop-service-type)`, `(service xfce-desktop-service-type)`, `(service plasma-desktop-service-type)` in my config, and instead want to replace it with something like `(my-desktop-environment-collection)`.
<Heterochromium>Is this possible?
<gkoebel-ext>I think you'd need to write some Guile to just bundle those up into said structure. If I new more lisp I'd prototype something
<Heterochromium>Also, I wanted to define `(my-desktop-environment-collection)` in another file, not the main config that defines `(operating-system ...)`.
<kestrelwx>You can do that, just have your function return a list.
<kestrelwx>I think the only problem with using modules that are not in store is they are not saved for provenance besides the configuration file itself, I was meaning to open an issue if that's the case.
<Heterochromium>kestrelwx: Got it. Thanks.
<riabenko>untrusem: I iterated over the packages, but none requires it. It looks like it has been already reported and it is probably due to the grafts. So, sorry for the noise. https://codeberg.org/guix/guix/issues/3617
<olivial>does guix have a mechanism similar to nixpkgs overlays? where you can apply changes to a package in your own code and it will propagate to its dependents
<untrusem>olivial: yep
<untrusem>grafts
<olivial>untrusem: hmm, I had understood grafts as being analogous to replaceDependency in nixpkgs, where it replaces the dependency by switching out all the store path references in the derivation outputs without rebuilding them?
<Rutherther>that is correct
<olivial>which is useful for different things than overlays
<olivial>you're out of luck if there's an abi compat break, for example
<Rutherther>they are not equivalent of overlays. There is no direct equivalent of overlays as guix just doesn't work like that. See the package input rewriting for how to modify the whole dependency tree https://guix.gnu.org/manual/devel/en/html_node/Defining-Package-Variants.html
<olivial>I'll take a look at that, thank you <3
<Rutherther>and also transformations, those are also described there, those are mostly just a friendly way of package input rewriting for the most common cases
<olivial>hmm, so this is analogous to overrides in nixpkgs?
<olivial>let's you make a new variant of an existing package as a separate object, but doesn't let you apply changes to the whole package tree systemically?
<Rutherther>it applies it to the whole dependency tree
<Rutherther>it is not analogous to overrides
<Rutherther>overrides apply only to the package directly, that would be inheritance of the package with modify-inputs
<olivial>ah, I see
<Rutherther>ie. if you had libfoo -> mylib -> myapp, and you did package input rewriting on myapp, mapping libfoo to libbar, you would get libbar -> mylib -> myapp, it traverses the whole tree
<olivial>neat!
<Rutherther>there's this package-mapping procedure that's allowing you to apply any procedure on the whole tree
<olivial>so in theory, if you wanted to hack together an overlays-like mechanism, you could apply modify-inputs to your system closure (I don't know if that's the right term in guix-land, sorry)
<olivial>?
<olivial>ah, sorry, answered by the package-mapping message I just hadn't seen it yet :)
<Rutherther>if you're looking to replace inputs in your whole operating system, there are some ways to do it, but none of them trivial. There is an open PR https://codeberg.org/guix/guix/pulls/7968 with a solution though
<olivial>ooh, yes that looks handy :D
<mlx>HI, how is 32 bit support in Guix? Can I install icecat and librewolf on 32 bit through guix package manager?
<Rutherther>gnu/packages/librewolf.scm:250:2: warning: package librewolf@149.0-1 does not support i686-linux
<Rutherther>unfrtunately doesn't look well
<mlx>how about icecat?
<Rutherther>same
<mlx>:(
<mlx>Thank you for information
<untrusem>hi I haven't looked into crossed building librewolf yet
<untrusem>maybe something could be done
<mlx>As I know Firefox will drop support for 32 bit this year
<untrusem>ohh no hope then
<yarl>Hi civodul, did my comment helped?
<untrusem>just a question
<untrusem>/offtopic can anyone who is in #guile see my messages?
<haugh>kestrelwx: I have found at least half a dozen config errors that show up as backtraces from ui.scm but I think that match-error just indicates an unhandled situation.
<haugh>untrusem: we can see your messages, we're just busy pretending this distro is stable
<haugh>takes a lot of energy
<untrusem>lol I meant in #guile
<kestrelwx>untrusem: https://logs.guix.gnu.org/guile/2026-10-16.log
<untrusem>kestrelwx: yep that's why i asked, my messages are not there
<untrusem>lol
<haugh>I do not sew recent messages from you in #guile
<haugh>*see
<untrusem>hmn strange
<untrusem>will try again later then
<untrusem>haugh: you should create a issue on codeberg about you config errors
<untrusem>I saw you here yesterday as well
<haugh>If I have to do that then I should really switch to
<haugh>*switch back to a stable distro and just run shepherd at user level
<untrusem>irc is ephemeral
<untrusem>sadly that kind of attitude won't get help in guix
<lechner>Guix is more stable than Debian.
<haugh>I used Debian for six years and it never crashed on upgrade
<kestrelwx>haugh: Did `reconfigure` with that same configuration file previously succeed?
<untrusem>as everyone in volunteer here, we have less people, so some messages get missed or people are working on another thing
<haugh>I got it to succeed once with that single core flag "-c 1"
<kestrelwx>Debian stable or like sid?
<lechner>What kind of equipment, please?
<untrusem>kestrelwx: i pinged you in #guile, do you see it
<kestrelwx>No.
<untrusem>either I am shadow banned or they are require logged it accounts
<haugh>lechner, AMD CPU, Nvidia GPU
<untrusem>haugh: if you want to have more eyes on your issue, creating a issue is better
<haugh>If the solution to not being able to upgrade the operating system is to create an issue, I cannot defensibly justify using this distribution prpfessionally, which is my sole interest in reprpducible operating systems.
<untrusem>okay you do you
<kestrelwx>haugh: So last generation for `guix system describe` is today's?
<untrusem>there is no magical spell that will fix it, folks will need logs and other things, and by your behavior looks like you are searching for a spell, I won't engage further
<lechner>I ran Debian for twenty-five years on i386 and amd64, and Guix is more stable. The Guix development branch will run for months without crashing, and for upgrade problems there is roll-back.
<lechner>The only serious issue Guix has is the syntactic love with configuration records that can make upgrading difficult, but a careful inquiry had so far solved every issue.
<lechner>I was unhappy with Guix only in the first three months, when I couldn't wrap my head around the non-FHS setup and then when beta-tested the Shepherd timers.
<lechner>haugh / Will you please post your config again?
<untrusem>`roll-back` have saved me multiple times
<haugh>I actually love the syntax and will certainly keep using guix, it's just guix system which objectively does not work. this idea that I have to get my kernel from a third party is so... out there. descriptions: paste.c-net.org/NormalRelieved
<haugh>I will create an issue on the codeberg if only as a monument to my failure
<haugh>Here's the (censored) top level of the config throwing a (guix ui) backtrace on reconfig: paste.c-net.org/ChillsRooting
<haugh>When I instantiate a vm from this config I get "guix system: error: the used bootloader 'grub-efi' is an EFI bootloader; it requires GPT partitioning"
<haugh>untrusem: I have been asking for help for months.
<kestrelwx>For this same issue?
<haugh>No, for a variety of issues with using GS as a daily driver.
<haugh>Three machines, different issues
<noxi>haugh: Did you post the .scm you're trying to run with guix system? I couldn't find it in the history
<haugh> https://paste.c-net.org/ChillsRooting
<noxi>I believe your WD500 drive boots in MBR mode?
