<kestrelwx>Good night!
<mra>i've almost managed an installation, but i'm having a weird last-second error with grub installation. grub-install fails with the error "failed to get canonical path of '/bin/efi'"
<tomenzgg>system-config-printer is giving me an error of "Printer requires the '/path/in/store/hash-cups-2.4.14/lib/cups/filter/hpcups' program but is not currently installed." My cups-configuration already has (extensions (list hplip-minimal cups-filters)); I'd though that was sufficient but does that not provide hpcups?
<lechner>mra: Did you boot into EFI?
<Cubi1>i've been working on that package definition, and I please need help. https://paste.debian.net/hidden/5be4f604
<Cubi1>(substitute* doesnt do anything (even though the parameters are all correct)
<Cubi1>on a package*
<yarl>Rutherther: just saw your message, nice! Got to try it. I didn't tell "it's not possible", I said "I think it's not possible according to this commit message" :).
<mra>lechner: i did, yes
<lechner1>mra: Is that supposed to read /boot/EFI?
<lechner1>Lower case
<mra>lechner1: well, it should be installing files in /mnt/boot/efi
<lechner1>mra: but why /bin/efi?
<mra>oh, i see what you're saying. that is strange, i agree...
<mra>i don't think it should need to? like, even if the installation medium isn't booted with UEFI, it should still be possible to do a UEFI installation
<mra>(although I am booting with UEFI)
<lechner1>It is not possible because efivars are not accessible, but that's not your issue
<lechner1>I wonder about the path
<Cubi1>i fixed my issue with substitute* i just didnt use regex escapes..
<mra>lechner1: i needed to build a custom guix to build a zfs system, so to initialise the system i ran `/mnt/guix-tmp/pre-inst-env guix system init /mnt/etc/config.scm /mnt`
<lechner1>mra: Great! All set now?
<mra>lechner1: no, this is where i'm running into the issue with grub-install
<mra>running the command that i mentioned fails
<lechner1>I dont think you can install to /mnt if that's where you are
<mra>lechner1: am i misunderstanding the installation instructions? i thought that to install you mounted the file system on /mnt and the boot partition on /mnt/boot and installed to /mnt
<lechner1>Either way, I've never used ZFS but I think you are very close!
<mra>i think i'm close too! getting an installation image with working zfs kernel modules was a big hurdle, and i was able to build a patched guix, i just seem to be stuck on whatever's going on with grub here
<lechner1>I'd ask the zfs folks. You are either hitting a specialty item or are tired and text blind to a silly typo
<mra>sneek: later tell hako hey! sorry to bug you again, but i seem to have zfs working except for an issue with grub. i've made a boot partition and a zfs pool, mounted a dataset at /mnt, and mounted the boot partition at /mnt/boot. i built a patched guix with 8346 in /mnt/guix-tmp, but running `./pre-inst-env guix system init /mnt/etc/config.scm /mnt` gives an grub-install error: "failed to get canonical path of /boot/efi" any ideas?
<sneek>Okay.
<lechner1>mra: earlier you wrote bin/efi
<mra>lechner1: irc typo only. double checked my config, it says boot/efi there (as it should)
<mra>thanks for pointing that out though
<lechner1>Can you see the efivars or efibootmgr?
<Heterochromium>By chance does anyone have a configuration for Guix System on Btrfs over LUKS that I can copy?
<Heterochromium>I'm new to Btrfs. I think I messed something up during the configuration.
<mra>lechner1: yeah, `ls /sys/firmware/efi/efivars` returns a bunch of stuff
<Heterochromium>Tips/pointers on how to get Btrfs over LUKS working would also be appreciated if that is all that any prospective readers can offer.
<lechner1>mra: Is /boot/efi mounted?
<mskiptr>to answer my own question from a while ago: To get rid of those hints that I should set up =GUIX_LOCPATH= (which are pointless in the case of a container), I just have to run =guix= without env variables like =LANG= and =LC_*=.
<mra>lechner1: /boot/efi isn't a mountpoint, /boot is the mountpoint, and i have a fat32-formatted partition mounted there, yes
<mra>sorry, /mnt/boot
<lechner1>mra: I think that's the problem
<lechner1>Grub-install has an option for the mnt mismatch
<mra>really? i thought that the boot partition was typically mounted at /boot
<lechner1>mra: --root-directory
<lechner1>I had that issue years ago
<lechner1>Or maybe I'm hallucinating
<mra>lechner1: i can't find any reference to that in `grub-install --help`, and at any rate i'm not running grub install manually, it's being run as part of running `guix system init`, so i don't think that's it
<lechner1>mra: yeah, I agree
<DragonMaus>mra: from what I recall /boot mount is just a MBR thing, GPT/UEFI uses a fat fs mounted on /boot/efi
<lechner>Hi, what's my nick, please?
<DragonMaus>haven't messed with bootloader stuff in a while though, so ymmv
<mskiptr>DragonMaus: on most systems I'm actually mounting the EFI partition on /efi and then bind-mounting a subdirectory of that on /boot
<mskiptr>sadly, it doesn't really work well with GRUB
<mskiptr>but with plain efibootmgr it's a super clean setup
<mskiptr>e.g. Arch Linux gets to keep its kernels in \EFI\archlinux or the EFI system partition, while when booted into the OS they just show up at the standard place (so in /boot)
<mskiptr>plus, thanks to BTRFS subvolumes, that would technically let me install any number of different OSes with just two partitions total
<mskiptr>s/or/on/; /bind-mounting/s/on/at/
<DragonMaus>interesting
<DragonMaus>i just use zfsbootmgr these days, which is pretty close to the minimalist experience of efibootmgr if I understand correctly
<DragonMaus>haven't even touched grub in many years, lol
<mskiptr>hmm, it looks qutie interesting!
<DragonMaus>mell, except for my recent attempt to install guix system 🤔

<civodul>Hello Guix!
<untrusem>civodul, Hi
<untrusem>ACTION askes civodul to check his mail, untrusem is waiting for a reply
<untrusem>flurando: you here?
<untrusem>sneek: later tell flurando: I am on the `4` part of you CloudInit setup, I have taken a look at logs too, I wanted to know after how long one is expected to login via user@<ip> as I tried after 5mins but it ssh command doesn't do anything thereg
<sneek>Got it.
<untrusem>hako you here?
<untrusem>I tried your guix-setup option but I don't think its for vps where you atleast have recovery right?
<ArneBab>After updating I hit a strange emacs bug: https://codeberg.org/guix/guix/issues/11785 – this is before a system restart, writing now because I may not be able to write again immediately if this problem strikes after restart.
