<podiki>(i'm gonna say guix says hi back)
<PotentialUser-11>no, i dont have autologin enabled
<sneek>Welcome back PotentialUser-11, you have 1 message!
<sneek>PotentialUser-11, lechner says: / Do you have auto-login configured?
<lechner>you can disable gdm and log into a virtual terminal. then you can start X or Wayland from there
<singsangsung>I am confused by these lines in the docs: "The build procedure for Guix is the same as for other GNU software, and is not covered here. Please see the files README and INSTALL in the Guix source tree"
<singsangsung>but...there is no INSTALL file
<bavier>singsangsung: that should probably be fixed. :/
<bavier>singsangsung: it's referring to the common 'configure; make; make check; make install' procedure
<singsangsung>righto
<singsangsung>looks like that's not the correct path for me anyway, off to attempt the aarch64 qemu image to get arm binaries out of guix pack
<bavier>singsangsung: that'd probably work. I used to create some aarch64 packs on an x86 system; I think this used guix's qemu-binfmt-misc service?
<synchromesh>Hi folks, is there a best practice for configuring ~/.ssh/authorized_keys?
<untrusem>synchromesh: there is a openssh-service-type
<apteryx>singpolyma: the INSTALL file is generated post bootstrapping the build system, so if you start from Git, it's missing (you need to run ./bootstrap)
<apteryx>if you start from a dist tarball, it should be there
<synchromesh>untrusem: Cool, thanks
<PotentialUser-11>yeah thats what i did but after login in the tty network-manager stops writing the resolv.conf file
<PotentialUser-11>it only shows the comment: This is a placeholder
<lechner>PotentialUser-11: It's a known issue. Delete resolved.conf and herd restart NetworkManager.
<apteryx>PotentialUser-11: did you run something else than openresolv's resolvconf to update /etc/resolv.conf? This is what NetworkManager uses, and it has safeguards to avoid multiple implementations attempting to maintain in at the same time.
<apteryx>so if you regenerated it with another tool, or custom made it, it's expected that NetworkManager/openresolv will barf on it, if it doesn't have its own comment at the top of the file.
<ham5urg>Has anyone mastered to run an external GPU connected to a laptop? Would like to invest but the risk is holding me back.
<Deltafire>err.. that shouldn't happen: https://paste.debian.net/hidden/2e00eeb1
<Deltafire>guix 5375f33 from Aug 11
<Deltafire>`guix pull rollback` followed by `guix pull` seems to have bypassed it
<vntsuyo> https://vi.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Guix
<vntsuyo>just completed a basic article for Guix in Vietnamese
<civodul>vntsuyo: nice!
<civodul>since a week or two, filtering in emacs-forgejo no longer filters for me
<civodul>anyone else seeing that?
<civodul>csantosb maybe?
<charlesroelli>Not sure if it's related, but since recently filtering doesn't work at all when logged out, try e.g. https://codeberg.org/guix/guix/issues?state=open
<csantosb>civodul: with `default-directory` in a Guix checkout, M-x `forgejo-vc-pulls`, followed by M-x `forgejo-pull-filter` and "robocop" shows guix/guix#11680 for me, don't you ?
<HannahUwU>Uhm, is the website down or is it just me
<HannahUwU>nevermind, it's only gnu.org apparently
<jussi>I'm learning how to update some packages to guix/guix repo. The Yas snippets are magical with Emacs. o_o
<untrusem>jussi: :)
<untrusem>I use tempel but yes
<untrusem>they help alot
<stampede_>Hello
<stampede_>I wanted to ask, is renaming packages allowed? a package was just added yesterday, called `noctalia-shell`, but upstream PACKAGING.md mentions that it should be called just `noctalia` to differentiate it from when the package was called `noctalia-shell` before the rewrite from quickshell to C++
<stampede_>I know it's a very nitpicky thing, but i thought since the addition is still very recent there could be room to amend it?
<lechner>Why did upstream see a need to differentiate the two?
<stampede_>lechner: because the C++ one is an entirely from-scratch separate package that has no direct upgrade path from the quickshell one. Users were instructed to uninstall `noctalia-shell` and install `noctalia` instead using their package manager if they wish to upgrade. The quickshell one is unmaintaned currently
<lechner>stampede_: This is a specialty issue. I would find the person who made the upgrade in Guix via the log or via got blame and write to them. Either way, it seems the new package is clearly the successor. Also, upstream attempts to control naming in Guix have generally been unsuccessful. That's because Guix has a better idea of what the worldwide name space looks like (or what it should look like).
<stampede_>I see, alright
<PotentialUser-11>apteryx no, i really didnt use any of those. the only thing i made is remove gdm an it stoped working. thats why i couldn't undestand whats happening
<protvin>Hello
<noxi>Does noctalia still have opt-out telemetry?
<untrusem>ohh is it something that can be turned off in codebase, if you you can ask the guix packager
<jussi>untrusem: Tested Tempel, seems really nice too. Thanks for the tip!
<untrusem>everything minad makes is nice
<untrusem>jussi: :p
<untrusem>when you make a pr ping me, you will get superfast review delivery experience
<sigttou>guix getting a lot of advertisement due to the no llm statement, nice
<untrusem>sigttou: where?
<sigttou>untrusem: reddit/twitter(x)
<sneek>wb efraim
<stampede_>noxi: for me it was opt in. The default settings had it turned off.
<stampede_>the noctalia telemetry
<untrusem>sigttou: ohh there is already a subreddit for guix its unofficial if that's what you referring to being a advertisement
<sigttou>untrusem: nah, people talk about https://codeberg.org/guix/guix/pulls/11407 on these platforms, which is attention -> advertisement for guix :)
<stampede_>that's good
<stampede_>honestly guix feels so obscure lol, i heard about it only by happenstance
<stampede_>and now i'm neck deep in it, with my own personal guix channel and all
<untrusem>nice
<untrusem>mine is here https://codeberg.org/untrusem
<stampede_>yep i saw it
<stampede_> https://codeberg.org/stampede/midnight
<stampede_>this mine
<stampede_>it's small, only a few packages that i use
<untrusem>later tell stampede_ you saw my channel already, lol
<lonely_ghost>i think the latest iso has some problem with the installer. the standard iso works well.
<hako>lonely_ghost: this is a known issue https://codeberg.org/guix/guix/issues/7373
<lonely_ghost>hako: thx. my bad.
<Heterochromium>Is it possible to install Guix to a Btrfs with root and home subvolumes that can be resized later?
<nikolar>well, subvolumes resize automatically so to speak
<lechner>yeah
<Heterochromium>Does the "graphical" installer support this?
<lechner>never used it
<Heterochromium>Btrfs is missing from KDE Partition Manager. How do I get it to appear?
<kaelyn>Hello and good day, #guix!
<civodul>howdy kaelyn!
<kaelyn>Small codeberg question: assuming regular contributors can do so, how does one add a label to a PR?
<kaelyn>Specifically, https://codeberg.org/guix/guix/pulls/11728 needs the security-fixes label applied. It also doesn't look like there is any team that gets automatically tagged for xorg-server* updates (i.e. for gnu/packages/xorg.scm).
<civodul>kaelyn: you should be able to click on the “Labels” drop menu on the right, no?
<civodul>i have just added the label
<kaelyn>civodul: Thank you for adding the label! I don't have a "Labels" drop menu anywhere on the page that I can see. I can click on Reviewers on the right to change that, but below that the "Labels" an
<kaelyn>and "Milestone" headers are just plain text.
<kaelyn>I think it might be dependent on whether one is a member of the guix org on codeberg.
