<lechner>They may be via FTP. Also, there is #gnu on Libera <sham1>Not totally useless, you can still use it for flatpaks <sham1>Oh, apparently that had been in the backlog for 4 hours now <cnx>hi cbaines, does the data service fail builds with log larger than 512 MB? <apteryx>heads-up, the minimal no-LLM policy has been merged with commit f85bb7e7ba507b7e904a9eac53b2297c47913fbb <cnx>wait, which repo are we talking about here? <cnx>neither guix nor data-service has that commit <apteryx>look like my push failed silently, redoing it <cbaines>cnx, are you seeing any builds that fail because of this? <cnx>oops sorry pasted to the wrong window <cnx>btw is the build log compressed? <cbaines>yes, but the build coordinator agent limit is on the uncompressed size <cbaines>the limit could be raised for the bordeaux build farm agents, but it looks to me like that build logs excessively... <cnx>yes, it's seems to log all the tested numbers <untrusem>not much activity on mailing lists these days <cnx>shall i start a thread /j <cnx>fwiw it's the discussion period of gcd 9 and i still haven't managed to read it <cnx>seems like you have a solid idea how to start that discussion d-; <untrusem>like guix providing an option to automatically import the missing modulde when we build the packages rathe thatn "forgot to add this module <module>" that guix shows <untrusem>my previous thread didn't gain much traction :p <cnx>the wiki one? something something trigger-heppy merging maketh heppy peepol? <untrusem>better systems for issue and discussion as well <ennoausberlin>I get slow downloads from ci.guix.gnu.org as well as from bordeaux. Is there an alternative? <cnx>ACTION has no idea how fast the listed mirrors are <ennoausberlin>cnx: Thank you! I was not aware on this chapter in the manual <cnx>btw ci.guix.moe provide substitutes for the official guix channel as well and it's pretty reliable <cnx>ACTION thinks the -M flags can makes the small downloads go in parallel <cnx>untrusem, since you're here (and i'm too lazy to draft a full message), let's chat here <cnx>i think fundamentally issues/q&a are viewed by people differently, some as a backlog that must not grow, and some as a knowledge base about the project <cnx>for the first type we need to make sure the relevant people are aware of each issue <cnx>since we organized into teams, the issue template should advice filers to tag the relevant team(s), which must be documented somewhere <cnx>(comment on issue template are plain text and also doesn't work for anything longer than a few lines) <cnx>that way we can also timely triage the stuff for later navigation <cnx>so far i think the codeberg/help-guix division is working well on the issues/q&a split tho <cnx>as for wiki, i'm not sure how to experiment without the project's endorsement <cnx>it's not like we have a large userbase to call from <cnx>i don't think the cookbook being in texinfo the barrier, as we technically allow other formats <cnx>for writing, that is <untrusem>I send that mail to start the discussion, not actually state what I am saying is better <untrusem>we actually need inputs from people who *tried* to contribute but failed <cnx>on the other hand, doc/*.texi being giant, uh, books makes it impossible for (non-emacs users?) to navigate <untrusem>"a manual is not a wiki" that was my point <cnx>can we lobby the guix foundation for another poll w.r.t. contribution feedback <untrusem>if we could style our manual on web as a wiki, or make it better to navigate, that might help too <cnx>the cookbook can be a wiki, that's basically how the fossil/sqlite folks do it <cnx>thay just have to be structured into files i guess <cnx>i recall asking some guix veteran about it and can't remember if the answer was nobody tried or there were some technical obstacle <nmeum>do Guix teams usually have dedicated communication channels and if so, what do they use for this purpose? currently considering setting up an IRC channel or something for team-haskell. there is also the Guix zulip but not sure if that's being used a lot anymore? <PotentialUser-11>today i reconfigure my system, gdm got blocked and i cant enter o change to another tty. some idea on how to fix it? <User-55>i have a question that feels silly. `dig` is in the utils output of the bind package according to `guix show bind`. but `guix shell bind` does not give me dig. what is the right command/package name? <PotentialUser-11>shepherd[1]: Service xorg-server running with value #<<process> id: 1070 command: ("/gnu/store/q1j0y835rk8bllc7dc2hcmc8f32khr3a-gdm-49.2/bin/gdm")>. <PotentialUser-11>gdm: Gdm: GdmDisplay: Preparing display: /org/gnome/DisplayManager/Displays/643356528 <PotentialUser-11>gdm: Gdm: GdmLocalDisplayFactory: wayland login display for seat seat0 requested <PotentialUser-11>gdm: Gdm: GdmLocalDisplayFactory: New displays on seat0 will use wayland <PotentialUser-11>gdm-session-worker: Gdm: GdmSessionWorker: opening session for program '/gnu/store/q1j0y835rk8bllc7dc2hcmc8f32khr3a-gdm-49.2/libexec/gdm-wayland-session' <User-55>ah, colon to the rescue. `guix shell bind:utils` gives `dig` on the path and in <cnx>User-55, try guix shell bind:utils <cnx>i don't feel i deserve it d-; <User-55>to be fair, using colon was a guess, not something if found in the documentation <cnx>nmeum, the only collaborative team (as in, with proper plan and goals, and more than one active members at a time) were python and codeberg was sufficient <cnx>User-55, try 'info '(guix)G-Expressions' <User-55>maybe the tab completion could also show the ':' parts when tabbing after `guix shell bind` <User-55>as for info, after 25 years on unix i still cannot navigate it <cnx>me neither, the middle ground tween emacs and vi bindings is confusing <untrusem>but yeah I can understand, there not seem to much activity <untrusem>the web interface/style for info manual is not that helpful and also not discoverable <civodul>the goal is to address this particular painpoint <untrusem>civodul: btw did you got my mails, I have been having problems sending mail for past few days <civodul>i did get messages from you, but i only check a few times a day <civodul>you can check the mailing archive online though <untrusem>"messages" ? I only send a single encrypted mail to you <civodul>untrusem: oh yes, i did see that message too! it wasn’t automatically decrypted for some reason <PotentialUser-11>can someone explain what is the problem with gdm?? o how can i fix it?? i also tried to remove it and then network manager stop to write the resolv.conf file. <PotentialUser-11>i also tried disabling wayland like this and still keeps being blocked: (gdm-service-type config => <untrusem>PotentialUser-11: are you on latest guix? <csantosb>Related guix/guix!10931 / guix/guix!488 ? <cnx>nmeum, i meant to say team i was in d-; i should eep moar <PotentialUser-11>yes i'm in the latest version. i'm going to try adding (service gnome-desktop-service-type) <PotentialUser-11>yeah i don't like it. i tried removing gdm but then network-manager stop writing the resolv.conf file <untrusem>ohh i don't have this problem, I thought it was fixed <PotentialUser-19>hi again. i ran into the same issue from two days ago: my user's home symlinks will not save after accidentally deleting some of the legacy backup folders in `$HOME`. should i just revert the system generations instead of switching/rolling back home generations? <riabenko>PotentialUser-11: Did you remove GDM, or did you replace it with something else? How do you start a user session? <PotentialUser-19>or rather, should i use `guix home import` again? will that save the symlinks even after shutdown? <PotentialUser-19>also, what is the difference between `guix-config/home-config.scm` and `$HOME/guix-home-config.scm`? are they the same thing or different? <n|Phreak>so if you do a echo $HOME you should see /home/<your_user> <PotentialUser-19>n|Phreak `$echo $HOME` works but not the services. all user created files are there, but using `herd status` gives me an error. <n|Phreak>hmm ok , how did you setup guix and are you using guix foreign distro "other than guix system" ? <PotentialUser-19>n|Phreak im using the Guix SD. i set up the user's config with `guix home import ~/src/guix-config` i believe. i cant remember the command that generated the home config but i assume it was something similar to that. <n|Phreak>ok so you created a guix home config which pulled in your current profiles information and its stored in ~/src/guix-config ? <PotentialUser-19>n|Phreak i believe so. i think i used a sample home config from the guix manual. <n|Phreak>does anything appear when you run guix home describe ? <PotentialUser-19>n|Phreak yes. it shows the current home generation with the channels i have. <PotentialUser-19>and the `guix-home-config` file i have ends with `home-config` but the file generated with `guix home import` doesnt <n|Phreak>try guix home reconfigure <path_to_home_config> <n|Phreak>Sorry if you have to repeat yourself , working at the sametime and playing musical laptops <PotentialUser-19>n|Phreak im reconfiguring home right now with the new file. ill need to shutdown the machine and come back here if there are any issues. <lechner>Is this still the X vs Wayland conflict? <n|Phreak>Has anyone setup a subsitution instance on a foreign distro to allow local guix machines to update via cache ? <n|Phreak>x vs wayland ? depends what you want to use it for ? <n|Phreak>x will give you a slight speed advatage for gaming though (latency wise) <lechner>I just meant the conversation with PotentialUser-11 <n|Phreak>ahh ok , I thought they just needed help with guix home config <PotentialUser-19>n|Phreak hi again. reconfiguring with the new file via `guix home import` did not work. for instance, i have `gfvs` installed, but i dont see the `trash://` folder. <n|Phreak>hmm what is your setup , OS - Window Manger - filesystem etc <PotentialUser-11>lechner i dont really know what the error you say. im only using sway so maybe it is <lechner>PotentialUser-11: Can you restate your issue, please? <lechner>Or maybe I got confused with PotentialUser-19 <n|Phreak>you using libre kernel or linux kernel ? <PotentialUser-11>arter i reconfigure the machine gdm crashes and block my machine. these are the logs: 2026-10-07 17:12:46 localhost gdm: Gdm: on_display_removed: assertion 'GDM_IS_REMOTE_DISPLAY (display)' failed <PotentialUser-11>2026-10-07 17:12:46 localhost gdm: Gdm: Child process -1211 was already dead. <PotentialUser-11>2026-10-07 17:12:46 localhost gdm-wayland-session: GLib: Source ID 2 was not found when attempting to remove it <PotentialUser-11>2026-10-07 17:12:36 localhost gdm: Gdm: on_display_added: assertion 'GDM_IS_REMOTE_DISPLAY (display)' failed <PotentialUser-11>2026-10-07 17:11:28 localhost pulseaudio[1615]: [pulseaudio] authkey.c: Failed to load authentication key '/var/lib/gdm/.pulse-cookie': No such file or directory <PotentialUser-11>2026-10-07 17:11:28 localhost pulseaudio[1615]: [pulseaudio] authkey.c: Failed to open cookie file '/var/lib/gdm/.pulse-cookie': No such file or directory <PotentialUser-11>2026-10-07 17:11:28 localhost pulseaudio[1615]: [pulseaudio] authkey.c: Failed to load authentication key '/var/lib/gdm/.config/pulse/cookie': No such file or directory <n|Phreak>ok audio issues , do you have wireplumber installed or just pulse <lechner>PotentialUser-11: Does the folder /var/lib/gdm exist? <gkoebel-ext>it occurs to me my goal of minimal interaction replacement of a system has a name "unattended install" <gkoebel-ext>which I believe the way to accomplish would be by developing my own install.scm file that somehow automatically creates a partition map on available drives and auto-selects options presented by the installer. <bremner>gkoebel-ext: you might be interested in "guix system install" <gkoebel-ext>bremner: that doesn't appear to be a command on 1.5? <gkoebel-ext>reconfigure requires you already have an OS installed <bremner>sure, but could be a live system or something <bremner>I have run aarch64 guix deploy from a debian running guix package manager <gkoebel-ext>vm works but that's more for testing on a system that already exists <bremner>I don't know if there is a guix live ISO <gkoebel-ext>My use case for this is if I send a machine into the sun how few manual steps can I get replacing that system down too. <gkoebel-ext>So I'm assuming that the target machine is entirely blank <bremner>I haven't done this with guix, but a minimal install with ssh-daemon and network deploy sounds plausible <gkoebel-ext>there is a way to make a live guix install. I'm not sure there's a way to get one guix to deploy another guix to a blank machine <lechner>People use VM for stateless machines nowadays <gkoebel-ext>there's an easy version of this problem which is recovering to a device that previously had guix since the devices will be known and thus a install image can be generated (tho i'm not clear on if the install image still makes you go through the graphical installer) <gkoebel-ext>then the hard version which is, it's been 6 years and you can't get identical hardware and everything is different <lechner>People care more about their data, I think. <gkoebel-ext>well that's part of what I'm doing as well but data recovery is trivial compared to standing up the system <gkoebel-ext>nominally a live usb that has a way for me to punch in creds to grab some multi-machine deployment for guix and install that onto the blank system would work. Then part of that install would be restoring data/state <lechner>I just installed a new bare metal in five minutes by adapting the configuration in the manual. <lechner>Maybe I adapted one of my existing config.scm's. <gkoebel-ext>so you still needed to manually specify how to partition drive tho correct? <lechner>But they are all minimal. I just have some special features and don't run stock Guix <gkoebel-ext>afaik you can't drop in a config.scm from a running system and have it install <gkoebel-ext>since the installer does several hundred lines of extra things not counting the install program itself. <lechner>Sure you can! The ISO image runs entirely in memory. Also, I don't use the installer. Just "guix system init" (which may have been what bremner meant).
