<orahcio>jlicht: Hi, if you have time, could you take a look at PR #11398?
<Heterochromium>How do you add a channel to Guix?
<Heterochromium>I made a `(channel (name ...) (url ...) (introduction ...) %default-channels)` file at `~/.config/guix/channels.scm` (it didn't exist before), then did `guix pull`, waited half an hour for something to compute, then tried to get packages from the other channel, but something isn't working.
<Heterochromium>`guix describe` shows that I'm only using the normal channel. Do I need to do something with PGP keys?
<Heterochromium>As far as I can tell, it's (1) Write appropriate channel information in `~/.config/guix/channels.scm`, (2) `guix pull`, (3) Get software from the new channel.
<Heterochromium>Am I missing a step?
<Heterochromium>Also, how does `sudo` factor into all of this? Is it necessary to do this separately for the root user?
<orahcio>Heterochromium: Hi, after `guix pull`, `guix describe` will show all channels information. I don't know why you can see just one channel.
<Heterochromium>orahcio: I logged out of my SSH session and logged back in. It worked. I guess that was the whole issue.
<orahcio>Nice!
<Heterochromium>What is the difference between `(cons* (channel ...))` and `(cons (channel ...))` when editing the channels file?
<Heterochromium>IIRC, the asterisk procedures in Scheme work recursively, but I'm not sure what effect that would have here, if any.
<lechner>It's in the Guile manual.
<cnx>see ,describe cons*
<cnx>i still have no ides how to use info for guile functions
<untrusem>I use embark for this
<untrusem>C-. s if the point is on symbol
<untrusem>cnx:
<tusharhero-xmpp>cnx: geiser has commands to help with that
<tusharhero-xmpp>Run C-h m to see the keybindings
<untrusem>geiser my beloathed
<apteryx>untrusem: what's the issue?
<untrusem>apteryx: it don't really work as intended, feels brittle
<sham1>Morning Guix
<untrusem>sometime it works, most time meh
<apteryx>it's rather reliable here, but you need to never turned on company-mode in its buffer ^^'
<untrusem>I use eglot but yeah don't use it here
<sham1>Anyway, cons* means that you can "prepend" multiple values to the list
<untrusem>apteryx: even with emacs-guix?
<apteryx>and also its performance suffers as the buffer becomes unwieldly large
<apteryx>So I sometimes C-c M-o to clear it
<sham1>(Not that cons or cons* are really about lists, which is probably why it's good that it's named that instead of LIST* as in common lisp)
<apteryx>(though that's not much of an issue anymore since I found most of my perf problems were caused by company-mode)
<untrusem>I don't why to use tempel snippets I have to enable geiser mode
<untrusem>apteryx: you use emacs-guix?
<apteryx>I do, mostly for its log mode, indentation, etc. I don't use its interface much at all.
<untrusem>I tried to use it but it was a mess
<untrusem>in eshell apparently, that's why I said geiser is kinda brittle
<untrusem> https://codeberg.org/guix/emacs-guix/issues/27
<apteryx>the --no-auto-compile is useful too, to avoid the repl attempting to compile guix, which would take ages
<apteryx> https://paste.guixotic.coop/.emacs-31734-32129.html
<apteryx>maybe that's no longer useful with recent emacs-guix modifications
<cnx>thanks, untrusem & tusharhero-xmpp, but i don't use emacs
<untrusem>cnx: blasphemy!!
<cnx>vi vi vi!
<tusharhero-xmpp>cnx: hope you find the light soon
<lechner>cnx: There is a standalone 'info' command, and the Guile manual is also available on the web.
<cnx>i'm aware of the info command, hence the question to look for individual proc in there
<tusharhero-xmpp>cnx: go to the "Procedure Index" menu item
<tusharhero-xmpp>There you can type "m" to search for a particular procedure
<cnx>Ah, thanks for the menu item name.
<tusharhero-xmpp>cnx: you are welcome. I recommend doing the info tutorial
<tusharhero-xmpp>Makes it easier to use
<tusharhero-xmpp>Do ctrl+h and then h again
<tusharhero-xmpp>To open the tutorial
<lechner>cnx: How about "i" for index?
<tusharhero-xmpp>lechner: it has too much stuff
<tusharhero-xmpp>M is more "curated*
<tusharhero-xmpp>It only shows the items on the current node.
<tusharhero-xmpp>So in the procedure index node it only contains procedures
<lechner>There is no incremental completion?
<tusharhero-xmpp>lechner: there is (just like emacs's default completion, you fit tab).
<lechner>what if you type cons*?
<tusharhero-xmpp>Yeah works
<lechner> https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_mono/info.html#Search-Index
<tusharhero-xmpp>lechner: is there way to open directly to a function's docs?
<lechner>Without picking a manual?
<tusharhero-xmpp>lechner: something like info guile -f name
<ikilledher>o/
<lechner>Sorry, I don't use the standalone info reader.
<tusharhero-xmpp>ikilledher: Suspicious user name
<ikilledher>tusharhero-xmpp: *washes hands* ;-)
<cnx>Thanks lechner, i for index it is!
<amrit>I'm trying to use a rust package on my custom channel. How do I make the definations in rust-crates.scm visible to my package?
<lechner>good question
<untrusem>amrit: check my channel
<untrusem> https://codeberg.org/untrusem/rain-and-roses
<amrit>untrusem: Thanks
<Heterochromium>What is Eclipse (the IDE) called on Guix?
<Rutherther>null
<nutcase>Heterochromium: what Rutherther wrote. Do you need to use Eclipse on a Guix system?
<n|Phreak>So its just easier to install docker containerd docker-cli with existing configs rather than trying to create a new service without using oci
<Heterochromium>Rutherther: I take it that means it isn't packaged for Guix.
<Heterochromium>nutcase: I was considering it, but it isn't strictly necessary.
<nutcase>Heterochromium: if you really, really need to run Eclipse on a Guix system (I'm sorry, if that is the case), you can use flatpak or a guix FHS container shell and run a downloaded binary in there, which is definitely NOT the Guix way. Maybe this helps: https://codeberg.org/nutcase/guix-shell-examples#headline-8 (feedback is welcome).
<lechner>Heterochromium: Isn't Eclipse all Java? I think it installs itself into your home folder.
<jlicht>hey guix
<sham1>Eclipse depends on GTK and similar native libraries
<sham1>SWT
<neonio>hi guix
<neonio>does anyone know which package contains 'dig', the dns lookup tool?
<neonio>i searched the packages to no avail
<neonio>i feel like guix could use a binary/header database, at least online
<lechner>Dig may be part of bind9 tools. Otherwise, there is lens and drill.
<lechner>ldns
<lechner>I published such a database four years ago, but it didn't catch on.
<rho`n>According to https://hpc.guix.info/package/bind dig is in the bind package
<PuercoPop>neonio: its in the utils output of bind
<neonio>yeah, i found it
<PuercoPop> https://packages.guix.gnu.org/packages/bind/9.19.24/
<vagrantc>can someone kick the tires on ci? builds completed almost 3 days ago for the kernel-updates branch ... but still no substitutes
<vagrantc>(with a newer build *only* 18 hours old with no substitutes)
<Heterochromium>Does PipeWire on Guix differ in some way from PipeWire on normal distros? I tried using `-audio driver=pipewire` on a QEMU VM, but that didn't work on Guix like it did on Fedora.
<sham1>It _shouldn't_ be any different. Any more details?
<sham1>Did you get any messages from QEMU?
