<Piraty>are floppy disks considered durable enough to store its data for $much_longer than , say , CD/DVD ?
<Piraty>apart from the hardware availability/repairability problem
<stikonas[m]>I doubt it
<stikonas[m]>Well, maybe in perfect storage conditions they survive long enough...
<stikonas[m]>Isn't hard drive much better protected as it is enclosed
<oriansj>avih: I've got it on my queue and I am thinking of defining hex0 in terms of Extended Backus–Naur form to minimize future confusion.
<oriansj>Piraty: Pressed DVD/CDs last much longer than floppy disks but burned DVD/CDs last shorter. Sadly the life of a media is more often defined by the life of available readers than by the media itself
<Piraty>and software capable of interacting with the reader and software capable of making sense of the data
<Piraty>think of all the public archives that settled for proprietary formats that are long gone and cost tons on money to have someone work on it / convert to new proprietary formats
<oriansj>Piraty: for example the classic: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC_Domesday_Project
<oriansj>which tells us very directly, anything without humans caring enough to keep something working; will die with little to no nope of recovery.
<oriansj>hence the archive team's recommendation https://wiki.archiveteam.org/index.php/Formats of "that are recoverable with simple tools and widely implemented"
<oriansj>which ensures greater odds the minimal number of people who care about a format and are capable to ensuring its survival exist.
<nektro>Piraty, tape is still the long term storage media of choice for many
<nektro>and +100 on using good formats and saving the things you care about because your collection will without question need maintenance
<stikonas>oriansj: a couple of typo fixes https://github.com/oriansj/stage0-posix-armv7l/pull/2 and https://github.com/oriansj/stage0-posix-aarch64/pull/7
