<oriansj>aggi: so you are in an environment where cooperative public activity is seriously punished? If so please feel free to talk to me in private on the matter.
<oriansj>muurkha: well I have seen a couple very portable cobol programs that have been ported across 12 different platforms and I have seen a cobol program that could only be built on a very specific compiler version and on a very specific host OS (which included what security patchs could or couldn't be installed)
<muurkha>oriansj: wow
<muurkha>oral history about writing compilers in assembly: http://ed-thelen.org/comp-hist/B5000-AlgolRWaychoff.html#7
<oriansj>wow it took 3 months for Knuth to do a compiler in assembly. I guess I shouldn't be surprised given the performance restrictions and the slow debug/devel process back then.
<muurkha>he wrote most of it on paper, in hotel rooms, as he drove across the country; he told the story in https://github.com/kragen/knuth-interview-2006
