<OriansJ>well we do have a working rust bootstrap but not a working node.js bootstrap; so it might be of use
<fossy>yeah that is what i was thinking
***ChanServ sets mode: +o rekado_
***rekado_ is now known as rekado
<OriansJ>I am starting to wonder what percentage of guix developers don't use substitutes
***card.freenode.net sets mode: +o rekado
<OriansJ>because I am getting a sneaking feeling that number is quite low.
<OriansJ>or am I just being too dramatic for finding issue with not being able obtain the source tar used to build the binary being distributed? Because I personally feel this is a symptom of something far more dangerous long term.
<xentrac>well, I think it's a problem we need to fix
<xentrac>but it's not particularly surprising. losing source code has been a common problem for decades
<xentrac>it's getting better now, thanks in part to CVS, Git, Debian, Nix, Guix, GitHub, ...
<xentrac>the Archive
<xentrac>and I guess a huge factor is actually the plummeting cost of storage
<civodul>you may like https://guix.gnu.org/blog/2019/connecting-reproducible-deployment-to-a-long-term-source-code-archive/ :-)
<bauen1>it also just occured to me that a boostrap from minimal seed linux from scratch guide might be useful (once we have a working gcc bootstrap), both to have something to show that isn't just guix but also to document the entire process
<bauen1>but i do recall that you need some autotools and what not at some point, so it might become a bit lengthy lol
<bauen1>in the end it should become possible to boostrap from just an usb drive with a generic linux kernel and toybox, and a few gb source code
