<wingo>that file is compiled with -Os, which is not a usual compile flag <wingo>so... originally i was thinking it was a problem because some of the local variables are bound to machine registers, and maybe the compiler failed to ensure that was the case <wingo>i guess that could be a factor <wingo>Amynka: the patch looks correct but it is really working around a compiler bug in a specific scenario, so it's not something we will take upstream. that said, it looks harmless to apply downstream if it is useful to you because perhaps you can't use a different compiler or something <drp>does compiling with the libguile.h link to the guile executable or embed the guile vm into the program? can I build a program and run it on another computer without guile installed? <dsmith-work>drp: You also need to link with -lguile . That's usually a .so . Not sure if static linking still works... <dsmith-work>The guile executable is just a thin wrapper around -lguile <dsmith-work>drp: But you also need other stuff, like libgmp, libgc, and others <dsmith-work>drp: So, Yes, you can run your program without the guile exec installed, but you must have the guile libraries and dependencies installed. <drp>dsmith-work: Thanks for the info, I was assuming guile could be embedded entirely due to gnu cash in windows <drp>but that might be more complicated, I don't have a windows machine handy right now <Nafai>wingo: I enjoyed your Strange Loop talk, watched it yesterday <katco>Nafai: it had a kind of zen flow to it, didn't it? :) <wingo>& hello katco, good to see you here :) <wingo>ACTION been plane-dislocated the last few days <katco>wingo: i'm lurking until i have time to do something fun with guile :) last thing i attempted was a go package for guix, but someone beat me to it <wingo>i am mostly online in euro-hours but folks are generally pretty nice for questions & stuff <katco>wingo: is this channel OT friendly? i wanted to ask how you went about starting your garden <wingo>sneek: later tell katco this is how you send a message for someone when they next speak <katco>bots say "this is how you send a message for someone when they next speak"? <sneek>Welcome back katco, you have 1 message. <sneek>katco, wingo says: this is how you send a message for someone when they next speak <wingo>i think the channel is maybe somewhat OT friendly? usually it's pretty quiet so OT is OK, i think the vibe would be just generally get a feel for when people have guileish questions. dunno. goal would be that this is a nice place for guile people <wingo>which necessarily means good on-topic stuff but as people we are not always on-topic :) <wingo>with the garden it was pretty silly, i had just rented a house and decided that digging up part of the yard and planting stuff would be a good idea <wingo>in france landlords are pretty hands-off; they don't do anything for you but they rarely require things of you either <wingo>we must have started with mesclun and peas as it was late winter then; tomatoes (from seeds failed as we weren't good enough; from plants was fine); some soybeans and courgettes and stuff <wingo>some success, some failure, but the nice thing is that you get better at it and also come to accept that some years, some stuff just fails :) <katco>:) i am pretty sure i will kill anything i touch for awhile <katco>i was thinking about starting with an indoor herb garden to ramp up gently <wingo>growing from plants works well, and for growing from seed i don't know if you have a good store locally; i find that i really like seed catalogs <wingo>you can get a wide variety of robust things that are a bit weird <wingo>for me i have less-good results in containers; things are much easier in the ground. but most people are better at watering and care than i am :) <katco>i'm sure i can dig something up around here <wingo>growing plants is funny too because you discover alternate geographies, like networks of seed producers and nurseries and gardening/growing groups <wingo>overlays on the topology of "normal" life <katco>i've experienced this! i've been passively collecting info and i've noticed entire new networks <katco>St. Louis apparently has a lot of gardening clubs/centers/resources <katco>so if i'm to take away one thing from your experiences it's probably: don't be afraid to kill things at first <wingo>that's the other nice thing, there is soooo farrrrr to go in gardening <katco>or rather don't let tha tput you off <katco>what do you mean? like flower pot --> industrial farmer? <wingo>heh yeah :) i have completely terrible results with beets, for example :) <wingo>i mean like... well for example <wingo>i have been gardening for only a few years and listening to the u.k. podcast/bbc4 radio show 'gardeners question time' for all that time <wingo>but then recently visited 'rhs garden harlow carr' a few weeks ago <wingo>and holy crap i didn't understand what an herbaceous border was <wingo>like what a bed of plants could be <wingo>i grew up in north carolina and my idea of landscaping was like mulch and some bushes <wingo>generally their gardening game is amazing <wingo>i am surely embarassing myself in front of the uk people here :) <wingo>but it's like, i didn't even know what was possible <wingo>so not levels in terms of industrial, but you can always make better and better gardens, in many different ways <katco>it will be good to have a hobby that doesn't involve clickety clacking <wingo>good to dig and weed when the code is not going well :)
